This article is quite informative. I have used mostly Kingsford original and some from the province of Quebec many years ago. The stuff from Quebec I always had trouble with but that was over 30 years ago. enjoy the read! 

I am going to try the  Royal Oak next. The number 1 in this article.

I only use Solid Hardwood Lump Charcoal. Burns hotter for longer and has better taste.

Briquettes are made from the Dust left over from making the Lump Charcoal...

Cowboy or Royal Oak are both Great.

And for a real twist, try the Jack Daniels Barrel Smoking Chips!

We do have the royal oak chunk but I doubt we have the cowboy anywhere near Eastern Canada, we do have some other chunk brands as well.

you can smoke the chips Sparty? :shock: .....:evil:.......when I grill Salmon or any kind of fish I like to use the wood chips along with the charcoal....but I like your choices @Spartacus

also any kind of charcoal that isn't soaked in lighter fluid .....this is why I like the "hot box" and no,this is not a reference to a female body part @WeednFeed

......:blink: also....I know this isn't grilling but I have been looking into a wood pellet smoker that is really nice.....my next step....

I have purchased 2 of the Weber fire starter Chimneys, one for the house and one fir the camp. They work awesome just with 2 pieces of news paper!

i have never seen a hot box in my area and never heard of before this post. I suppose I Gould just use the Weber chimney in a safe place to start  some new charcoal as needed. The chimneys I purchased are the larger size.

do you have a link to a hot box?

It's funny. But I have a whole bunch of different ones I use depending on what I am cooking  from kingsfords competition, applewood, hickory and mesquite briquettes along with some different brands of lump charcoal    Each one has just a little difference in heat smoke and taste they impart on the food to say that any is the best

for my bge i only use the charcoal from big green egg i have tryed many other brands  but never got the same results as the bge kind. that said  shit is expensive.

 

for my weber kettle is use  ecco brasa  briqettes made of little cubes made of coconut shells

Yes, never use lighter fluid unless you want to invite Cancer imho.

Soak the chips in water for 10 mins, then dry them in a paper towel. Then throw them right into the burning charcoal after lowering the Air coming into the Grill.

This will cause them to smoke like crazy for a good 3 mins straight.

Not sure if wood pellets are treated with anything when manufactured to help them hold their shape...

So not sure they are as healthy...

fire starter chimney is the same as a hotbox..."Hotbox" I believe is a slang term handed down .....

I only use Lazzari mesquite lump charcoal. As sparty mentioned, most commercial charcoal is just reconstituted dust and it stinks. Mesquite gives a nice smokey flavor, lights without starter fluid, and burns much hotter than any of the commercial charcoal available. It's also much less expensive if you buy it at places like Orchard Supply or Home Depot. A 30 pound bag is like $12.  Once I get my fire hot I use apple wood chips for additional smoke flavor.

Well I just added a coating of lard to the grills to season them and cooked up these tasty bits. Mmm! I used Royal Oak briquettes, I'll get to the lump charcoal eventually.
