I've seen photos of the venerable P-51 coming back from escorting missions in Germany with carrot vegetation in its "air scoop," it was flying that low. The P-51 Mustang was EXTREMELY INSTUMENTAL in the destruction of Berlin and Herman Goering's vaunted Luftwaffe. It was the only fighter plane, with its beautifully-engineered Rolls Royce Merlin (thank you, to our British allies) 12-cylinder engine and body crammed with extra fuel, to escort the American B-17s to Berlin and back. It was also EXTREMELY INSTRUMENTAL in escorting the American B-29s from Iwo Jima to bomb Japanese cities, and back. Mr. Goering even remarked, when he saw P-51s in dogfights with Meschersmidtt (spelling, here, someone will correct me) ME-109s and Focke-Wulf FW-190s (more spelling correction from those that feel to do so) over Berlin: "The jig is up." He knew--Mr. Goering, that is--that the Allies had, finally, an escort fighter plane that could go to Berlin and back (to Britain), yet still have enough fuel after dog-fighting to strafe trains and other infrastructure, and such. Frickin' Allies--we love you, man!!! Good always--ultimately--overcomes evil. Just musin'. Ayaq FUNky and JohnnyNashville 2 Awards

While they had great kills with their powerful engine and eight--yes, EIGHT!!!!--.0.50 caliber machine guns, the Thud's simply didn't have the "legs" to escort the bombers all the way to Germany and back. Enter the P-51D Mustang, with it's ellipsoidal wings, beautifully-engineered Rolls Royce "Merlin" engine, body crammed with extra fuel and outfitted with external "drop tanks." ZZTop had a song written about the frickingly-awesome P-51D Mustang, bubble-canopy, and all: "She's got legs . . . she knows how to use 'em . . . She's got legs . . . she knows how to abuse 'em (the ME-109s and FW-190s and HE 110S, and yadda, yadda, everything, that is) . . ." The only thing faster than the P-51 was the ME-262 "Swallow," though the beautiful DeHaviland "Mosquito" almost hit the mark. The German Arrado AR-something-or-other (it had two counter-rotating and centerline props, one fore and one aft) fighter was the only plane that could fly as fast, but it wasn't officially "operational." The Arrado AR-something-or-other bomber had great speed, as well. Hitler was so adamant about sinking the bridge over Ramagen that, when his artillery and Stuka dive-bomber attacks failed to drop it, he sent in the Arrado jet-propelled bombers in, as well. The bombers missed, thousands of American soldiers and tanks crossed the besieged bridge, until it finally collapsed, taking around 60 (mostly-wounded) Americans and engineers with it. Fast-forward to the Pacific, America's "2nd Front." American P-38s (well, one outta the squad, anyway) shot down General Yamamoto, the so-called "architect" behind the Pearl Harbor surprise attack. Atrocity? Good always overcomes evil. America and its prized allies will prevail. God bless you all. Shee-ite. Ayaq Edited September 3, 2017 by AyaqGuyaq Awards
