Hey guys,

I play on your Cod2 servers, looking for some advice on a very recent ping increase problem.

For the last couple years, I have usually pinged betwween 40-80 (max) on your Cod2 servers.  Consistently.  Within the last week or so, my ping (not only your servers, but ALL other servers as well) has doubled to tripled (150+) and makes it nearly un-playable.  Asking in-game, no one else has apparently experienced this.

I did "Google" it, but I'm not exactly a techie, and the 100,000+ hits were a admittedly a bit confusing... and hoped one of you smarter-than-me types, could give me a little direction as to how to figure out what has caused my ping to jump.  I'm DYING to get back to cracking skulls on your servers, but it's not as enjoyable (playable) at high ping.

BTW, on my old favorite server (yes, XI is the new one) we asked people over 150 ping to leave, as it caused lag spikes for everyone else...... generally, what is the max ping you want on your servers, in case this isn't easily fixable?

Suggestions/ recommendations?   Again, this has just happened very recently, and I have added no hardware/software & made no significant changes at all.  I run Norton 360 Premium, and nothing is showing as added to registry in the last few months.  Just one day for no apparent reason, my favorite gaming/stress relief outlet became unplayable <:(

HELP!!!

Don't make me run around my house, stalking the dog, going "pew, pew, pew" for lack of gaming relief.....  the wife's idiot cat, on the other hand, deserves it.

Hey Ferret,

Have you tried resetting your router and Cable modem???

If not,, disconnect them form the power source and leave them off for at least ten seconds.... plug the modem in first .... then the router..... wait to let them reconnect to service and then try gaming again.

You could also try shutting off your virus program.... I run my computer with no virus checking.

When I get a virus, adaware or malware I download any number of free programs, Install and clean, then uninstall and I am good to go.

It is worth a try.

Someone else might have some other ideas.

I had my ping go from a consistent 80, up to 95 and 100. I feel for you.... it completely changes the game for me.

I was getting the same problem in the 4 days running up to Christmas, only this was on cod4, at certain times of the day my ping would shoot up to around 600, it's usually between 110 and 140 depending on which server i am playing, i thought it was possibly my internet provider doing some work, ain't played much in the last 2 days but when i did my ping seemed fine....fingers crossed.Undecided If we asked people to leave our servers whose ping was above 150 we would be looking at a lot of nearly empty servers.

If you have cable maybe the whole town was home for the holiday and they're hogging bandwidth ?    Like Artimus said, reset the modem and router - sometimes that helps.    Are the down/upload speeds normal?  If not just call you ISP and have them look at it.

I've had some issues with mine for the last week as well. It seems as though it is on the ISP side is the culprit, as my download should be 10Mbps, and my up should be 1Mbps, all week, I have averaged less than 4Mbps down, and less than 1 up. noticed on nights my ping would spike that I was only getting about 1.5 down, and about 200k up. I have tech coming tuesday to check my modem, and drop line. I'm on a cable package, TV/Internet/Phone, so the modem gets a workout, I hope that it's just time for a new one.

Don't know who you ISP is, but mine is Comcast. I called them and had them send a "refresh" signal to the cable modem (after I had done a power off reset). That seems to help. In fact, they now have it as an option in the auto-phone system so you don't have to wait for Sandeep in Bombay to answer the call pretending he is in Michigan.

The other thing I found (and Laszlo too) was an issue with windows 7. Maybe a machine that is not quote up to the task, but when we downgraded back to XP all my ping issues went away. In 7 it would spike over 500 sometimes (on the edge of maps and real intense maps like the pistol one). Now it is steady at around 35-38, with an occasional spike to 45

Check for peer2peer downloads, a/v updates and any background programs especially if you've installed a new program.

alot of things can effect ping and with windows 7 's innate security layers it can get really tough and aggravating when you first switch all your machines to the operating system to figure it out --it really annoyed me that now I have to learn port config and forwarding for not only my firewalls but my router again but is the price we pay to play --- all in all the operating system does alot of things better and more efficiently then the previous versions .

If you do not use a bigfoot network card that prioritizes your game info /traffic automatically some port configuration may be in order---

each game out today often has this info on there forum pages as many run into this problem as the game traffic is not getting through the window's firewall or your router properly (had a headache with dragon age origins ultimate and Battlefield Bad company until I learned how to set up the ports necessary to allow the games to run on  windows7 x64 )

As many have stated in this post , do a trace route on your current ip ---many isp's have this on there tools page for free (mine does ) or you can goto www.pcpitstop.com and use there free utility to find out if your problem may lie with you or your isp and then go from there.

so you don't have to wait for Sandeep in Bombay to answer the call pretending he is in Michigan.

Lol, roger that.

I powered down & reset everything, experimented with having anti-virus on/off, ran a couple diagnostics my brother sent me, and ran a tracert only to find the jumps were double what they should be, across the board.

Still pinging in hundreds. Yell   If I Jones out & come in to play anyway, just let me know if I'm causing spikes & I'll drop out immediately.

Gonna document & send request to ISP (Knology, which until this, has actually been very good)

Thanks for the advice on ping, guys... truly appreciated.  Us non-techies really appreciate what help we can get....

My brother got me a Radeon 5750 for Xmas Sealed.   Wow, seems like a REALLY good card so far.  I might re-load COD4 & look at Black Ops.

Anywho, sincere thanks for all your help, & hope to bash all yer friggin' craniums very soon.....

 {my way if saying "thanks" ;)  }

One thing, make sure your 5750 card is not causing the problem. If your power supply is a little borderline it could cause some issues.

Try putting your old card in to see if the problem "goes away"

If it does, post here and one the techies can help you look deeper into that
