No Smell ? Change tranny fluid ( there is a pump required to get all of the fluid) If thats not the issue there are kits to help shifting.

Be sure the vacuum line is plugged in on the passenger side near the oil pan. Where it plugs up looks like a small rounded top can. There will be a small tube sticking out the top. Check there and at the intake manifold near the carb. You'll need two people, one to crawl under and wiggle the vacuum tube and the other to look at tha motor and trace the tube up to the manifold.

From what I have read, most third gear slip issues are related to direct clutch/reverse clutch slippage. I will check my manuals at work to see if there is a pressure tap for third gear clutch pack pressure. Some guys are using the Trans-Go shift kit , but I think it won't help for long, you can't usually repair a trans with the contents of an envelope or bottle for very long. You might want to find a rebuilt or a good core from the bone yard and do it your self. If your vacuum pump is worn out, you will have a hard brake pedal, unless you have hydra-vac. I think that big blonde chick may have hydra-vac too, just sayin'.

o.k., my newest GM trans manual ('89) doesn't show a pressure tap (port to read hyd. pressure) but my old manual ('67) did. It only shows line pressure, so it probably wouldn't help narrow it down to an individual clutch leak. All three clutch packs are engaged in third gear. Is the slipping only occurring during the 2-3 shift, and then third locks in after that?

Check for leaks, even being a little low can cause 3rd to start slipping, uses the same clutches as reverse, but reverse uses a higher line pressure than in third. After 71 they changed the seals to teflon, which become brittle after a while because of heat cycling. Just make sure it is to the top of your full mark, not in the middle, sometimes with older vehicles, especially diesels can wear out the transmission mount causing the tail of the trans to sit a little lower than it is supposed to, causing the fluid to all move to the back of the pan. While the dipstick and filter/pickup, is toward the front of the pan. So anyway, just make sure it is full, it may not being getting enough fluid if it is not.

it depends on year/make/model but the the best thing I read here was a boost valve sticking..if you can manipulate the throttle to make it mess up/or not..

Did it start slipping after you changed the fluid. how many miles are on that tranny.  has it been recently rebuilt.

the problem with high mileage trannys is that sometimes if you do a tranny flush and change, it removes all the  muck that is actually keeping the clutches from slipping.  what happens is over time the clutches wear down to a point that there is hardly any "meat" left on them, all the material that has worn off is in the fluid and act like a liquid clutch so to speak. In the shop I worked in it was a general rule that if a tranny hasnt been regularly flushed and it has over 125k miles we would insist that the customer NOT get the flush as it COULD lead to having to rebuild the tranny. just a thought for ya

What year is it most modern transmissions are getting closer to CVT constant velocity transmissions , which some models are

hybrids of both , there is also an oil pickup which has a screen which can easily clog with a metallic type grease alluminum

shavings mixed with oil and super heated , and make sure there are no dents on the pan near the oil pickup

are you completely positive it is a TH400 and not a TH350. Th350 has a vaccum shift thing on the side if the vaccum lines not hooked up or has a crack it will make it slip when it shifts.
