Well I finally did it. After months of searching (both of the soul and the actual job variety) I have found another position.

Let me give you a little history. A couple of years ago I was the Engineering Manager, in charge of a group of around 30 Engineers, both Electrical and Mechanical (including one of the best EEs I have ever known - Lt. Laszlo) Suddenly I was replaced by "the guy we really wanted all along but couldn't hire because of the economy"

Since then I have moved from position to position, boss to boss, and finally placed in a position that had me traveling around 70% of the time and working crazy hours, averaging around 72-74 per week (averaging, for God's sake). I have been doing this for over a year now.

While the extra pay was great, my personal and family life was being destroyed. My health was suffering for all the flying, eating in crappy restaurants, staying in crappy hotels, etc - I am too old for that shit.

I have found a position that gets me back on my career path. It is as the Electrical Engineering Manager for a company that works mostly with the food and drug markets. The travel will be non-existent, they only work around 40-45 hours per week (they are a French-owned company after all) and, best of all, they matched my base salary at my current position and added a 10% personal performance bonus along with 4 weeks of vacation to start, instead of 2. I

It was really a no-brainer. I texted my boss of the week this morning asking him where he will be first thing Monday morning and he called me within a minute asking when I was leaving. I think he fell out of his chair when I told him 2 weeks. (I think he was being cynical as so many people have left our department in recent weeks)

My last day at my current employer (assuming they don't do something stupid and walk me out) will be July 27

I am as nervous as a high schooler on his first date. I haven't changed jobs in almost 14 years.

Here goes the start of the next chapter in the life of "The Grip"

Congrats Nick. I know what you mean about major changes after being at the same job for years. You get comforatble with the company but when the work load increases all you want is out. At age 50 I left the family business, something I had been building since age 22 and it was very liberating, but scary as hell at the same time. Sometimes change is good, as long as the change is what you really want and can afford to make.

Best of luck in the new job.

Good luck with the new position Nick...I always found when I became comfortable in a job it meant the job had become routine and boring...I always liked to be challenged it keeps you sharp and innovative... :) :)

Congrats and good luck. I understand the fear of change, hopefully things will keep working for you, and everything will fall in place.

Good luck Nick, and congratulations on your decision. Know what it feels like to be burdened by long hours & ugly travel. Takes the joy out of everything. Best wishes on your new position.

Good for you. My last place closed after working there for almost 18 years. Put a lot of hours in there over the years and yes the money may be good, it is not the be all when you have a family though. Was pretty nervous with the thought of having to start all over again somewhere else but found something close in occupation, the pay is good, and 40 hrs a week. So, I hear ya Grip. Good luck with the next chapter.

Well, that's it. I am officially "unemployed" for a couple of days. I start the new job tomorrow (Monday)

Walking out of my old job on Friday after 13 years was very weird indeed and currently I am without a cell phone and laptop. I am disconnected and having to spend the weekend like we did before all the electronic "tethers" - It is kind of cool

Awesome! A change is a s good as a vacation, as they say. I learned years ago to manage the work/life balance. Good on you for landing in a spot that has reasonable work hours and that will let you look after your health and reconnect with family.

Aw schucks, Nick! You're too kind! Are you recruiting for EE's at the new place?!!

Seriously, as I said before it's sad to see you go but I understand the reasons. Funny how that works. At the same company, I haven't work over 50 hours for years since being made to go salary except a few times. Must be I'm in the right group?! (Or maybe I get 12 hours done in 8 -hehe?!) Anyway, I wish you all the best over at your new "chapter" and I assume now maybe we see you butt on the servers more! At least I can still curse at you!!
