As the owner of an internet radio station and well versed in the American music industry's view of things, that's something you do NOT want to do.

There are sites and apps like spotify, LastFM, Pandora, Rhapsody, and the like, that may let you create playlists that you can share with friends, but they are handled within the framework of a site that has been properly licensed to create a public performance of copyrighted material. They may serve you up some ads or limit your fidelity, but they have music royalties to pay. A monthly subscription may eliminate the ads and give you better fidelity.

But, yeah... Be careful.

I don't want to sound like I'm beating you up or anything, so tell me to fuck off if you want, but the bottom line is that "sharing" music with your friends is illegal. It's a violation of copyright law, and the music industry is venomous about it. What's wrong with your friends buying the same tracks you have already purchased? Your recommendation should be enough, right? And they can probably hear the tracks on some other service before they pull the credit card trigger and buy it.

Please support the artists you love by actually purchasing their tracks/albums. They have given so much and they are entitled to the expectation of being able to eat for all their effort and creativity.

I'll shut up now; I've probably beat this horse to death.

well we can leave the fuck of out. its not illegal to share covers and selfmade music. if it would the whole damn youtube would be shut down instantly.

but i must say that your comment in the whole was hostile and not called for so......wait ill take it back there should be a fuck of in place. read the law man and you can learn a stuff or two.

you dont know ANYTHING about me so who the hell are you to judge me??? i buy my albums.

yes you not only neat this horse dead, i think the whole farm got their share.

well, i was a professional musician for 25 years, and IMO the royalty thing these days is just crap. Publishing companies and record companies (who usually own alot of publishing rights) get most of that, unless the artist inked a good deal with the record company on their contract, which, unless you are U2 or RUSH or KISS or somebody at the level of complete self sustainment by fanbase, most artists these days make shit for royalties. Most artists make their real revenue by touring. Thats is always money in the pocket, even after all overhead is payed for. Royalties are usually used by artists to reimburse record companies for advances and such anyways.

As far as sharing, remember the days of the mix tape on cassette, or just recorded copies for your buds?? that was the same thing as filesharing, without the internet. Nobody in the biz kicked up too much fuss back then, so i am always confused by the fervor about it now.

anyone for a horse meat burger? hey! he horse is already dead!! lmao!!

dj, i get what you are saying, but what if he just wants to share his OWN material? how can he do that without sharing it with the entire world?

It seems to me the music industry is a little too oppressive in this regard. they make millions upon millions of dollars. sometimes i have reservations about our wonderful capitalist system... the rich get richer, and the poor ts poorer. ok sorry this is getting borderline political...

Rusty there are some peer to peer programs like bearshare that will let you both share both music and vids. just google it.

rusty, i'm sure there are alot of sites for uploading your own tunes...couple XI guys have over the last couple years to share with us here. Good luck finding the site you like and let some of us here listen to your music since you have become a frequent poster her on the site. As a musician i am always interested in hearing other folks play, original or cover, matters not to me.

Rusty, you will both need to download the program, then you can "browse" specific folders on each other's hard drive (you have to set up which folders you will allow others to access on your computer) then you can share to your heart's content. Also bearshare have some filters that try to stop piracy, but i think it is minimal. enjoy.

oh!! and did you know Xfire also have a way for you to share with friends... did it once or twice, but that was a while ago. and so does teamspeak 3.

Rusty - please accept my apologies. The LAST thing I meant to do was offend you or hurt your feelings! You never said they were non-copyrighted tracks, or your own. And I am not in the habit of stirring up ugly emotions, so again, I humbly apologize to you.

Where I'm coming from...

The prevalence of complete disregard for copyrighted material is disturbing. One of the other "gaming" things I do is fly flight simulators - FSX and X-Plane. Many people record their flights and create AMAZING movies out of them, and of course, they often provide a popular song as a soundtrack. They really don't get that they have broken copyright law by creating a public instance of the performance of copyrighted material. And you're right about YouTube, but in fact, a lot of videos ARE shut down due to claimed DMCA violations by the actual copyright holder. As for my internet radio station, people are trying to ripp my stream all the time, and the music industry says I am not supposed to allow that. And finally, in general 99% of the time people who are talking about uploading music to the internet so their friends can have it, too, they are talking about major label artists.

I had no way of knowing that you were talking about sharing your own music. It was MY BAD for not at least qualifying my remarks as applying to copyrighted material. But in my world, that's just a given. Nonetheless, that's no excuse, and again and again and again, I humbly apologize to you.

Perhaps Dropbox would be a great way for you to share your music with friends. There's a cool video introducing the service on their home page at http://www.dropbox.com

Dropbox is available on many platforms, and you can share with people who don't even have a Dropbox account. If you click a download link, then just cancel the download, there's a link on the page that lets you take a look at their FAQs which should answer any questions you have.

Again, I apologize for offending you and hurting your feelings. I was only trying to educate and did not mean to come off pompous and insulting.

Are we cool?

Hopeful we are,

djMot
