Has anyone taken an old laptop HDD and gotten a kit to make an external HDD? If so what kit is recommended? I found this one and am thinking about getting it.

OK Loader, I have an old laptop IDE drive from my old laptop that I took out before I recycled the laptop. Now I have this 500 gig drive just laying around. I want to reuse it if there is any way to do economically, so I can have an extra storage device that I have just laying around.

The cheapest way to go is getting an IDE HD enclosure, the one you  selected should do,  np,

They work, but be careful.

I smoked 2 drives with mine.

The drives got really hot and started the click of death.

Some of the better enclosures have fans. You can modify them and add your own.

I ended up leaving the cover off to disipate the heat and it was ok.

I guess I'll have to wait and see. I only paid about $10 for the case. Maybe I'll throw it into my work laptop bag for document backups. Thanks all for the input.

The one I had was a Vantec. It was one of the first ones when these became available

I think there were 4 slots in the case to let the heat out- It's no wonder it got hot.

You could smell the heat coming off the case and the drives.  Maybe the drives were on their way out, and the extra heat sped up their demise. Who knows.

You should be ok- if it gets too hot, just open the case to vent it.

I've got some laying around too, and plan on doing the same thing, just haven't gotten to it yet.

Take the HD in and out as you please real fast if ya use the eSATA interface.

The latest case I used on my home rig has this built into it! Any SATA drive you have layin around can be used!

Also great for copying all that data from the person that wants me to fix their PC.

Note: Both can read 2.5 "or 3.5" drives
