This is still a bit SiFi if you check out this video. The station is now active and gathers energy from the sun and salt.

NICE!  I wish clean energy like this was more profitable. If it was you would see more plants like this.

Right now Nuclear power is the best energy...  There's a nuclear plant not far from me.

It puts out 6.4 times as much energy at about half the cost. ... and takes 1/3 that much land.

Yeah : 7,7 square kilometers.

And "Arizona Public Service (APS), the largest utility in Arizona, will purchase all of the electricity produced by the solar plant for 30 years through a power purchase agreement with Abengoa.

Solana will generate the clean energy equivalent to that needed to power 70,000 households and will prevent about half a million tons of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere per year. The construction of Solana led to the creation of more than 2,000 jobs and a national supply chain that spans 165 companies in 29 states.

The total investment of the plant is approximately two billion dollars and during financing, Solana received a federal loan guarantee for $1.45 billion from the United States Department of Energy Federal Loan Guarantee Program. This support made the construction of Solana possible, creating or maintaining thousands of jobs both in the building of the plant as well as those direct and indirect jobs in the supply chain, as well as providing the Southwest with clean, sustainable energy using innovative technology. Abengoa currently has 1,223 MW of concentrating solar power in operation and 430 MW under construction. It is the largest CSP company in the world and one of the few that constructs and operates both solar tower and parabolic trough plants."

You realize how efficient this station would be if we could suspend it in space somehow?!   lol   Problem is delivering the energy back to the surface...

Haha yes. That would be not wasting space at Space.

Well, you know, WiFi can do a lot these days and why not the collected energy through there :)

Heck I want to have sunenergy on my roof, but man that is an investment for 20/30 years.

They should build piramides with it.

I "think" you're being serious posting this even though it's in the jokes forum.

While I completely agree that we need alternatives for electricity that are far away from coal and oil, I don't think this type of power plant is the answer. The solar plant cost over 2 billion to build and only generates around 200 MW of power, or enough to light up 70,000 homes.  That's over $28,000 per home.

Hoover dam would cost less than a billion to build today, and generates over 2,000 MW of power, or power for 700,000 homes.

We need more alternatives, like giant cattle farms to harvest their farts.

It is the forum for jokes and Misc, that is why I have put the "Misc" of miscelanneous, in the title sir :)

I will vote for more alternatives, but the power companies have to much to say and to lose money.

We have a field south of San Antonio. I will have to take a picture of it when I pass next time. Not as big as that but still pretty good size.

here is a pic of it..
