The Internet is full of disinformation, spread by people with agendas or those who are mischievous. At the lower end of the scale are the continual pleas on Facebook to spread garbage due to claimed "hacking" threats. At the upper end are articles that could kill or harm people - an example is a circulating hoax about "cough CPR". Between these extremes is material such as that above that could affect charities' abilities to collect funds to help people in need. The individuals defamed can fight their own battles but a typhoon victim lacking shelter, food and clothing needs us to put our hands in our wallets and donate rather than accept inaccurate excuses not to do so. In the UK, the accounts of individual charities are open to scrutiny via The Charity Commission. Anyone wishing to determine how a charity spends money on remunerating its staff, for example, may visit the web site and view the accounts before making a decision as to whether that is excessive. Link: http://www.charitycommission.gov.uk/ In Canada and the USA, as far as I can establish from brief searches, this kind of statutory government oversight isn't there but is being argued for. Have a read of the following and, people, don't be so easily taken in by what you read on the 'net! http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/charities.asp I certainly agree, Keg! ANYTHING with statistics or a questionable standard of conduct MUST be researched before regurgitating. OR, barring that, and assuming you simply don't have the time to do the research, ignore it. This crap is generated by internet trolls to infuriate the easily led. Don't be a lemming. This one in particular, has been circulating in endless waves. The only solid advice to give on charitable giving is to give to something you actually care about. If you must give "generically," like to some of the organizations listed here that have multiple outreach services, then do what you can to understand more about what the particular organization does so as to have a defined purpose behind your giving. AND... NEVER GIVE MONEY OVER THE PHONE TO ANYONE THAT CALLS YOU BLINDLY - even if you have every reason to believe they are legit. YOU should be the one initiating a charitable donation, not someone else panhandling for one. DEEJAYKEG 1 Awards

Mark 12:41-44New International Version (NIV) The Widow’s Offering41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. 43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” Awards
