They want to get rid of old A-10's... which have proven time and again to be extremely lethal... with an aircraft that dropped its first live bomb on a practice range only a couple months ago. Yes maintaining these older planes is expensive. But they are already bought and paid for. A single F-35 is hugely expensive up front and hugely expensive to maintain. Assuming they can fix all its problems. After that, there is one thing we learned about the AF. They prefer not to send their expensive and shiny new toys into combat areas where they can be shot down. Awards

Also, the A10 was designed in the 70s. We have much better computer systems for them to use now (prolly 90's stuff because of testing lag)

The A-10 is a fucking beast. 8 bomb points. A gun that can shred armor. A titanium tub to protect the pilot and can fly home with half a wing and one engine. There simply has never been a better CAS aircraft. It has a specific mission that cannot really be filled by multi-purpose aircraft like the F-15/16/18/22.
