I hope. I just have that little nag in the back of my head that when its all put together everything will work great... except both cards again.

just line up your ducks  by getting all current drivers for MB and hardware on a flash drive  and  use a fresh drive for your OS

Yup I dont have a new drive but I will back up my SSD again to a different drive for safe keeping. I am figuring a full reinstall from the disc and it will keep the current OS as an old version.

Fucking windows update. A common reported problem is that it is stuck at 0% even if you leave it running all night. Network activity is zero. Yes I did all the usual like checking for malware.

There were a couple MS fixes that were supposed to take care of it. But they dont. On top of that, unless the WU process is manually disabled it takes 1/4 of CPU activity and wont stop. As it is currently. MS had a list of other things to try that included manual WU installs and changes as well as registry hacks. But if that is the fix something is very wrong. In the short term, for the moment, I dont need WU so I am just disabling the service. Also, if no network access (no cable) it wont start either.

However I fear once the new system is built its going to do this with all the post install updates needed and I am screwed. I didnt know this, and thought they fixed it the last time it happened with some update.  I had it set as notify but dont install. So when I saw it today I saw the potential problem. Has anyone else installed Windows 7 in the last month and experienced this? I dont know what else to check and am not going to start putting it all together until I know I wont be fucked over by them.

Part of me still thinks they are secretly doing this on purpose to get people to upgrade to win10. But it seems some people having this problem have win10 as well.

you are right about the forcing to windows 10 thing

here is something to try and see if it fixes the broken updats

Link:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Install-Windows-updates

one of the last dropdowns has a fix it link called automatic troubleshoter

What to do when things go wrong

Updating your computer by using automatic updating, or by manually checking for updates, is the preferred way to get updates. Sometimes, however, computer, security software, or connection problems can prevent scanning or installation of updates. When this happens, here are a few things you can try:

If you have automatic updates turned on but some updates fail, try scanning for updates manually. This can sometimes fix the problem.

Be sure your computer is virus-free and malware-free. Run your antivirus and antispyware scanners before running Windows Update.

Close all your programs, and restart your computer. It is possible that another program might be preventing Windows Update from working.

Check your Internet connection. Be sure you can visit other websites before running Windows Update. Connection problems can trigger errors that can appear to be caused by other factors.

If you know the update you need, such as a service pack or security update, you can search the Microsoft website. Most updates also have a knowledge base article (KB) that explains the update, and most updates provide instructions on how to download and install manually.

If you continue to see errors, see this automatic troubleshooter on the Microsoft Support website, or go to the Microsoft Answers website for more assistance.

I ran a WU diagnostic. There is a problem that it couldnt fix. DIdnt it twice. Dunno why. I will try safe mode next. There were others three others that it said it did fix. Also twice, So certainly looks like something it wrong somewhere.

edit: Anyways, did all I could. Or at least all I could without getting into registry hacks and such. Made sure about services. So currently on 'checking'. But since the checks or records for currently installed updates was wiped it probably has to start over and see whats installed. Also, this is Thursday afternoon and MS could be overloaded due to all the Win10 people downloading with us mere mortals with Win7 having to wait.

When I do the rebuild I will start with the SSD only. Its not 'new' in the sense of it being unused. But it was purchased only a few months ago and for the most part only used for the OS and non-gaming programs. Why do I need a MS account?

Well updates are actually downloading. So I am assuming they get overloaded on wed/thurs and those of us with win7 are little better than dirt. We get to wait.

It was recommended I let the new power supply run on its own, outside the case, for a couple hours to break it in. Also to watch for anything that goes 'poof'. So seeing how it goes.

Got off chat and telephone with MS and both assured me that there will be zero problems, with a fully new system, for reactivation. Or worst case, call them and they will take care of it. I always worry something is going to screw with me.

Seasonic used to be cheap power supply's until PC Power and cooling bought them out.Now they make all of the internals for Corsiars Professional series power supplys. They still sell there Cheap ass ones just steer clear of those.Try to stick with a power supply with 1 or 2 beefy 60-80+ amp 12v power rails. All the cheap ones will have quad power rails with 15-30amp each and they will fail under the load of any decent system.Blown capacitors really stink up the place I'll tell ya.Never fun watching your money go up in smoke.

All the basics are assembled and it didnt go 'fffst!' when I turned it on. Took longer than expected because for me the water cooler was a bitch to install. If did it their way it would have covered up some important connections but looked around and found other ways people did it with this case. All the while worried that I would break the damn thing and spill coolant all over the place. But it seems to be working and the processor is 36c (I think) so I assume its not burning up.

And whatdayaknow, the 960 actually posts. So something went bad on the other board or processor even tho various diagnostics I could find around didnt spot anything wrong. So dunno. Speaking of which, seems nvidia just pulled the latest drivers. Or I saw some popup about that.  So something for everyone to check out.

Now onto doing a fresh install of windows, the drivers, and all that other tedious stuff.

I need to do all the security updates and fixes but like before, even on a totally fresh install, wu is taking 25% cpu, downloading nothing, and as far as I can tell not doing a damn thing. Except eating up processing time. Processing what, I dont have a clue. Not when it lasts hours. Normally I would just shut it off. But on a new install I need all the updates. Its really aggravating and until relatively recently I dont recall it being like this. And until I get all those new updates I am stuck and cant do much. I am still calling shenanigans on ms.

IMHO  go with one single GPU with lots of horsepower and matches your MB specs  .eg  v.3 PCI-e

Yes Sir! That way if your running one monitor you can add a second matching card and go SLI....or if you add another monitor or 2 you can add a crappy GPU for your extra monitors and maintain kick butt FPS on your gaming monitor.

the Skylake i5 6600k is one hell of a gaming cpu. and if money is a consideration, then the i7 6700k would be way too much money for you, with not that much more gaming power. and with a ASUS MB. the bios has a step up system for one click over clocking thats easy to use. (you wont get the max OC that way,,,but you'll get a good OC )

Thats what im going to be upgrading to myself.. i5 6600k with a ASUS ROG MB  with a M2 slot and some of that ddr4 ram :)

Got the 6600 instead of the K because I am not going to overclock. It also has less wattage which is a bonus considering how much the computer is on and electricity in CA isnt exactly cheap.
