Actually a lot of that was debunked as 'data suggests no' by the relevant health professionals when tracking how far back it went and where. As always things like this start as rumor along the lines of 'some people say' with no sources and then propagate... if you will pardon... like a virus on the internet. Seen it many times before and we will see it again. There is always a segment of the population, especially now, that actively look for conspiracies and such that tell them that this was all hidden from them by nefarious powers for whatever reason. And of course people look for scapegoats. "They KNEW and did nothing!". And yes, being locked up for so long... with only social media as your friend... spreads it all even more. As for masks, especially the non-medical ones around, they do nothing unless YOU are the one that is sick. Good for things like smoke and dust but nowhere close to being good enough to filter something as small as a virus. And they arent form fitting enough to keep you from breathing in shit from the sides. But it does help deal with those that are unknowingly sick in places with co-workers working close together for extended periods etc. And there are always those that feel 'off' but dont care. Also helps mitigate fear and that is also important. However its like 'duck and cover' in the old days as though that would keep you from getting fried by a nuke. Maintain social distancing.. a silly phrase but these are trying times... always wash your hands and dont touch your face. That is what will protect you the most. Also cover your mouth with your arm or shoulder if you are going to cough or sneeze. Disposable gloves do help, but you still have to use bare hands to take them off. And it also does no help if you touch your face (or your mouth like that the idiot in that picture) while wearing them. The job wants me to wear one at all times, so I do. Oh and yea one guy at work does have a skull mouth+neck cover and its pretty cool. A little bit of dark humor I guess, thank you for shopping at the death counter.

Also because we must keep in mind that they are a society where men think they can get hardons by mixing in powered rhino horns in their drinks. So others go shoot the rhinos (whats left of them) to get and sell it. Here is another joke. There are some... including some people in authority... that say the various health people knew something was up in the past with covid 1 but said nothing. On the air. Except there is no such thing as covid 1. Its called covid 19 because.... wait for it... it was first found in 2019. The saddest joke of all? Some people will still buy the covid-1 shtick anyway. Sometimes it makes you think that maybe we DO need to cull the herd... so long as the right people get culled. That is also dark humor.

After 50+ years maybe they are tired of dealing with moon landing conspiracists and they are screwing with them. I would but then again I can be a sarcastic person.

It used to be 'dont blame the messenger'. Except that these days often the messenger is peddling his own lies. Conspiracy theories tend to go around for one of two things. Either they can be fun... but totally bogus and we know it... or there are others that truly WANT to believe them.

The Stand occurred to me awhile back. The super flu, or captain trips (IIRC), for those that know the story. Of course his stories often have nefarious subplots. In this case a virus developed by the US military for whatever reason. And in that one the flu kills most who get it regardless of age or health. Nobody recovers. Stories like that, and various movies or tv shows, all use the word 'pandemic' so when people hear it in the news 24/7 they fear the worst. Unfortunately a lot of people cant separate fact from fiction. There were a handful of people that came by the store talking about government coverups and they truly believed it.

Its not just stupid individuals. Businesses are hurting because there are few or limited customers. The ones that are open anyways, which isnt many. We all know this. My particular employer, grocery chain, not long ago (maybe a month or two, before all these stay at home orders) decided that they wanted *everything* ready to sell in the department by 10am, not just the popular stuff. Which is a good time. Get it ready before the lunch crowd. But of course right now there is no lunch crowd. And there wont be for awhile. Its still often busy with regular shoppers. So the next thought was, get everything out and ready by 8am. That one came down 2-3 weeks ago. Maybe the early morning shoppers, since there is no breakfast crowd either. 8 am shifts (majority of the time myself) turned to 6am. Doable but barely due to driving limitations. And I feel fortunate that I am still able to get a paycheck unlike many others. So I adjust. However that wasnt working either. So now, its 7am when the doors open. Its not going to change that nobody wants it. But it does mean I would have to get there at 5am. Which is not going to happen and I told them that. They knew this when I was hired so they cant use that one against me. Up to them to figure out who is going to do it. Still, there is the disconnect between making shit available and nobody wanting it. Also, making it all three hours earlier... with nobody buying... means throwing it all away and charging against the department as a loss. And then they complain about that. Its a brave new world for the foreseeable future and they dont know what the hell to do because they wont accept the fact that there are no buyers to sell to. They got comfortable with their big profit margins and it dried up. Its not coming back for awhile. Long winded rant that I mentioned because yesterday I had a long talk with an independent contractor, also working in the department, was trying to discuss business with an upper level district person and she was snapped at for supposedly telling him 'how to do his job'. I said likely he was feeling the same pressure from people higher than him and it got to him. So its unfair to everybody. But only because some refuse to accept that current realities mean profit margins are way down and its not because we are doing anything wrong or not busting our asses accommodating people. Kinda reminds me of, way back in the day, how president HW Bush was very surprised that grocery stores used laser scanners and bar codes to sell shit instead of manually entering in everything. Obviously a guy that never bought a can of beans. Anyways, its my day off and I'm going to enjoy it.

Some are those 'essential' workers still on the job exposed to all the sick people so they can fight over the TP. On a side note, spell correct called them dick people before I caught it. Maybe it was correct.
