I just changed my rig, was under Vista 64, and now I'm running W7 pro. I reinstalled Cod 4 and Cod 5, and everytime (or almost) I get the ffollowing message (in both games): "Your computer seems to be modified since the last time you ran CoD, would you like the game to config itself for the new hardware? etc etc (this is an opproximate translation of the french version I'm running..) The same problem when I run by doubleclicking oon Xfire server as well as on the desktop Multiplayer icon. When I autorize the auto - config: no more console available, diminished FPS, launching in a resolution far inferiour to my display etc etc. When I apply resolution , antialias and so on, I never reach the quality I am for with the 580 GTX, that I can run far better when running after fail-save mode I kept my Vista64 drive to boot from: same problem on both games. Question 1 : Is it possible, that under XFIRE another configuration is applied than when running directly under dektop shortcut Question 2 : How to oblige the game to choose the best config for my rig, everytime it starts, or everytime I restart the computer Question 3 : Is there a way to force these games to launch in fail-safe mode, as this is the only way apparently to obtain maximum performance from the graphics card again, and how to save this config? Tried to look in several forums, and found no solution... Thanks in advance for your help! Old rig: E8400 dual core - 295 GTX * 4 gigs of mem - P5ND Asus MB under Asus New rig: i7 870 quad core - 580 GTX - 8 gigs of mem - MSI Big Bang Trinity MB under American Megatrends

BUT i noticed that if u turn off UAC, ur folders where it store maps, mods, players, config and all change. and very often when i join server, it reDL the map i already have, friggin annoying. Awards

Question 2: Next time it asks you to reconfig the game, say yes. Then, go in and change your resolution. That usually will clear the message, though I continue to see it in COD4 on occasion. I wouldn't change anything else under graphics other than brightness. Question 3: You shouldn't have to do that with the GPU you're running. Awards

As you have seen, saying yes resets you to default. Set up your config the way you want it, and then make a copy of it and keep it in another folder where it is SAFE. If you ever click 'yes' to that question again, you can go back to the saved copy and paste it into your folder to get back to your modified config. I, like you, learned this the hard way Awards

UAC is off under my W7 session, no passwords, no nothing required, it just boots Thanks for the tip for Xfire, at least that's assuring Harry I always like to see the rig up to it's limits, so with the GPU I run, I got FPS up to 500 looking in the sky, and 180 - 240 when moving through smoke, leaves and other complex sceneries... Now I never get more than 250 and 85, even less sometimes, and that is nost normal.... If ever I succeed once more to get the optimal settings, I will certainly try your solution, Bama! Anyway, thanks for these helpful tips, maybe should I lleave this ticket open !

Thats not entirely true, Xfire requires administrator rights to run because of the Xfire updater software, so any software that Xfire spawns will also run with administrator rights, on a machine with UAC enabled, this will load up a wrong config and map/mod folders than a desktop shortcut to the game will, it's a pain in the ass really but I never use Xfire to launch games any more

Its true that it has no control over it but launching a game through Xfire will launch it using a different config than if you use the desktop shortcut under a UAC protected machine
