Ziggi, and I'm sure many others, was fuming over accidentally hitting his Windows key and interrupting his game. I used to have a couple of batch files set up to perform a registry hack that would turn off the Windows key, and turn it back on again. I was thinking I could create a single batch file that would disable the Windows key, start HLSW, and then re-enable the Windows key when HLSW shuts down.

No dice.

It seems that this type of registry hack only works if you reboot the system. Impractical for a quick toggle.

Sorry about that.

However, on the odd chance that anyone might be interested in the registry hack to turn on/off the Windows key, you can head on over to this website and download a couple of files and read up on how to use them.

Hope that helps, and I'm sorry there isn't a more elegant solution to temporarily toggled the key on or off. On the other hand, a new gaming keyboard with this feature already built-in shouldn't be horribly expensive. The Logitech G510 goes for about $70 on Amazon.com and features a switch to turn off the Windows key. I have the G15 which also has that feature, but I don't think that keyboard is still in production.

The Corsair Vengeance K90 keyboard also has this feature. Any Kb that bills itself as a "gaming" kb should have this as a standard item.

You could try remapping to an area of your keyboard you don't normally game in. I am left handed and never hit my windows key so, for example, you could remap the windows key to your right CTRL or something

Here is a tweak program that can do that for you (It i

Personally, I'd take the less invasive route and disable the Windows key in the registry. If you guys want to leave an ugly gaping hole in your keyboard and run the possibility of causing irreparable damage to the thing, sure, knock yourselves out.

I solved my windows key problem with my spyderco knife. I have a gaping repairable hole. Threw the windows key in my desk drawer for when I sell my keyboard. Not.

You can permanently deaktivate the Win-Key by using a registry "hack"

I only use this key to lock my Workstation at work. At home it's permanently deactivated On my Keyboard (Logitech G15)

Once deactivated, you can also use STRG+ESC to open the Windows menu it's the same.

Apply this registry file (be sure that you saved your current registry) to deactivate the keys forever:

http://www.wintotal.de/server/tipps/tastenkomplett_deactiv.zip

Unzip theb doubleclick the .reg file. It will be Applied automaticaly then reboot.

You can also reassign the win-key to another key

(scroll for example) by adding this entry to your registry:

Click Start->Run and copy the complete line in the text Field

reg add "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout" /v "Scancode Map" /t REG_BINARY /d 0000000000000000020000005BE0460000000000

Reboot

Again:

Always SAVE your registry BEFORE changing anything!!
