Again people are our own worst enemies.

As some who have followed my posts I am a conservative, I have no problem with the death penalty, I believe in the right to own guns, and am a softy when it comes to animals. Even snakes.

The following vid is about the current snake hunt for Pythons in Florida. I hate seeing it but the logical side of me understands the need. Pythons have decimated the population of many species in the Everglades, Raccoons being only one example.

If only people did not release Pythons into a non-native environment this would not be happening. I also doubt this hunt will cure the problem. It will help but will not solve it.

As with so many things the people are the problem.

Point taken Shamu. But such is the history of the planet. Among theories on the disappearance of dinosaurs (besides the comet inpact) which has occurred several times, is continental drift where animals "invaded" other continents as they came together and decimated local populations by disease or otherwise upsetting the balance that nature establishes for a confined land space. When the Isthmus of Panama rose, joining North and South America, we were "invaded" by among other animals, camels, tapirs, deer, horse, saber tooths, opposum, armadillos, and porcupines - all animals not native to N. America. It's not possible to control pythons in Florida - the population is now 5,000-180,000. So this hunt for them seems useless.

Non-native invasive species are a major problem here too.

The nasty, disease-carrying American Signal Crayfish is one example, Chinese Mitten Crabs another.

Natural evolution I could accept, I just do not like man/woman messing with Mother Nature.

We have the same thing going on in our country now, the fairly placid Red Squirrel which is a native to the UK is getting wiped out by the aggressive Grey squirrel which is looked on as a pest, the Grey Squirrel was introduced here about 50 years ago (might be out a bit there) from the USA for whatever reason i don't know, our Reds are getting pushed further and further North, can't remember last time i saw a Red Squirrel. :no

All over the south at all lakes and reservoir launches, they have fish and game department making sure that your boat is clean of the invasive Zebra Mussel. Now only if they were big enough to eat then I wouldn't think it a problem. But they are killing all of the natural habitat/species in our lakes.

If there is a market for python meat or skins, even if there was over a million of the slimy bastards crawling around the hunters could keep the population in check. Humans have a habit of hunting things completely or nearly to extinction when money and food is involved.

In the states we have organizations like forgotten felines where volunteers capture, spay or neuter, then release cats to live in feral colonies. In Hawaii, they have similar organizations, only there they put the cats down because they kill off native wildlife, mainly rare birds.

In the Americas and most of the world, humans are the invasive species.

Wow! What a difference in culture or perception.

In the states, at least in Pennsylvania and almost all Eastern states, the Red squirrel is considered the pest and the Grey is considered a game animal protected by specific hunting laws.

In addition the Red is considered the aggressive species often driving out the Greys and the Grey more docile.
