The current edition of Windows Secrets Newsletter has given me some additional insight and reassurances that the computing world will not come unraveled if I take this plunge. Previously, I have been of a mind to believe that sometimes you just can't avoid it, and Java is just everywhere anyway, right? So why worry. Well, worry, but what are you to do? Break your machine because Oracle can't get their security shit together? Well, in light of these new insights, turns out a lot of my presumptions about the prevalence of Java have been erroneous, and Java may be little more that one big-ass security hole. (I see you over there nodding, Keg. lol ) A couple of things to note when contemplating disabling Java: Java is NOT JavaScript. Two separate things, no worries. That I already knew... Little out there on the web actually needs Java. Some sites do, and if one is mission-critical to you, you're SOL, sort of, but not completely... Java can be disabled on ALL of your browsers, but the Java Runtime Engine (JRE) can still run on your machine for local apps that need it. Local apps like the Eclipse development environment, or more likely, the Open Office (or better, LibreOffice) suite of OpenSource office apps. Java can be easily disabled on individual browsers rather than ALL of them, although the latter is way easier. The exception is Internet Explorer (big surprise, right?!) in which it is worse than multiple root canals to disable Java. Thanks Microsoft. Google Chrome will ALWAYS ask you (by design) if it's okay to run a Java applet if a website makes such a request. I'm on-board now. And I've chosen the path of least resistance to getting it done in the near term - simple checkbox in the Java settings Control Panel applet as illustrated in the newsletter. If something turns up broken, I can switch that check box back on, then disable it in Firefox, and just use Chrome to hit the sites that need Java which will kindly remind me to allow Java to run for those sites. I simply don't use Internet Explorer, and suggest none of the rest of you use it either. Firefox and Chrome are brilliant browsers and, despite arguably personal preference in the way each handles tab management, they are both equally worthy as an IE replacement. Here is the link to this Windows Secrets Newsletter. (please see both Java articles in this edition of the newsletter.) . Edited January 24, 2013 by djMot DEEJAYKEG and hxtr 2 Awards

Disable that shit! and run only when you really need to like said above. Java was first conceived with the intent that if you run this AP on this OS it will run on all OS's that have Java. Well MS fucked that up in part but was sued by SUN and they had to comply... but then Oracle bought SUN and it just kept going south and its original intent now forces its footprint on your PC and caused more problems to users and administrators.

When they started infecting pc's with this ASK fucking shit. Never trust any program that want to put ASK and hijack your default search provider. Unfucking believable. on last observation. I went to that site to see what it said. I went to the control panel to see this disable option as I never seen before and my last update was on 1-17-2013. It did not have the disable option until I did the latest update. Was not till this all came out that they added this option. Tells you Oracle has not nor had any intention of protecting anyone. And what the fuck does ASK.com have anything to do with Java. Oh I know... Ask points you to many sites that have Java exploits. Edited January 24, 2013 by hxtr Dark Asylumn and djMot 2

FYI... if you install a new update it turns Java back on and like I had mine set to not do auto updates.. it turned that back on. BigPapaDean 1

Click Start Menu and Search for "Turn Windows features on or off" scroll down and un-check Internet Explorer. As for Java, yes it's a giant fuck hole that we can live without. I use Firefox with AdBlock Plus.It blocks ALL popups and you can set it up to Block Banners on web sites which is awesome. I haven't had a virus in years.Streaming your p0rn0 instead of downloading it helps quite a bit. hxtr 1 Awards
