There is some files I need/want to delete to be able to complete a complete un-install of COD4 but I keep getting the message that I need administrator privilege to delete them. Funny thing is I am the administrator and I am the only one that is. I have been trying to access my safe mode but I don't find that mode in the reboot menu when I try to reboot. I also made sure all files involved were turn to writable so that would not be a problem but this also tells me I need admin rites. This damned thing has me about to pull the only one lil hair I have left on the top of my head out. Can anyone please help a frustrated old idiot?

Try running explorer.exe as administrator. Assuming you're using Win7, navigate to C:\Windows\ and find Explorer.exe. Right click -> Run as administrator, and then try removing the files that way.

Same damn thing happens!

would this happen if these were mirror files?

What kind of files are you trying to remove specifically? Extensions-wise. Are they in use?

they are my old profile on COD4 files! They shouldn't be in use at all except when I open the game. Well I went to un-install and when it asked if I wanted it to delete everything I said yes but it didn't do that now this!

Try right-clicking -> properties and see if these files are marked as "Read-only".

Here is one option...

Make a folder in c:\ and name it something simple and move the problem files into that folder. Then create a new file in the same location (C:\) and name it delete.bat. Put the following inside (using notepad or similar text editor). Be sure to replace "Locked Directory" with the folder name you used.

SET DIRECTORY_NAME="C:\Locked Directory"

TAKEOWN /f %DIRECTORY_NAME% /r /d y

ICACLS %DIRECTORY_NAME% /grant administrators:F /t

PAUSE

Then right click the new .bat file and "Run as Administrator". This should grant you permissions to remove the folder, and thus the files.

If that doesn't work for you, you can also try deleting the files by starting at the deepest level. Say you have a folder structure that looks like this:

folder \ foldera \ folderb \ folderc

           \ folder1 \

           \ folder2 \

Start by deleting "folderc", then "folderb", "thenfoldera \ folder1 \ folder2"  before finally deleting "folder".

Files created by programs, especially files that are intended not to be edited by the user (like CoD4 profiles, which can be manipulated into giving a player a higher level) cause awkward and annoying permissions when dealing with single files and especially in nested folders where lots of individual files are created in deep folder structures.

Some Viruses will mess with permissions.I've had this happen on more than a few customers PCs.Also changing hardware or hardware locations in your PC may cause this to happen.

If you can go into Safe Mode and move and/or delete files then I'm betting that you picked up a virus.

I have scanned and there is nothing found on it. This has been this way for some time, since August of 2012!

jsut cause ur scans dont show anything doesnt mean ur system is secure or isnt infected....do you have any anti spyware? sometimes spyware can do things as virus' can do as well...if not i would suggest Spybot Search and Destroy its what i use

Just to follow up, I figured out that Dean had two separate user accounts, both administrator, but only one with true full access. I removed the broken one and switched to the real primary, fixing the issue. For those who encounter this in the future, the fix I posted:

Make a folder in c:\ and name it something simple and move the problem files into that folder. Then create a new file in the same location (C:\) and name it delete.bat. Put the following inside (using notepad or similar text editor). Be sure to replace "Locked Directory" with the folder name you used.

ICACLS %DIRECTORY_NAME% /grant administrators:F /t

PAUSE

Then right click the new .bat file and "Run as Administrator". This should grant you permissions to remove the folder, and thus the files.

Works perfectly. If in fact the user account you're logged into is NOT a true administrator, the output from this batch will let you know. "This user account does not have access to these files." Otherwise it will state "XX number of successfully processed files. XX number of failed processes."
