I think the on board sound is good enough for gaming, It has improved a lot over the years, If your an audiophile, then a very good sound card would help, I have tried the low to medium priced sound cards and have found them no better then on board,

forgot to add , if your using USB head phones , they have there own , A sound card of any kind won't make a difference with them,

What makes the most difference is the headset. Get a good, comfortable, stereo headset with surround sound. It makes a whole lot of difference.

I happen to use a Logitech G 35. Lots of other choices out there.

Agree with Larsin.

The onboard card are good enough for "normal" home use like music and gaming.
If you want do do more like producing music you should buy a PCI card.
Everything else is nice to have. Some cards bring external connectors like Sound Blaster X-Fi.  This is nice

because you can place this connector on your desk and have direct acces to the volume control, cables etc.

I agree that a good set of ear phones are a better investment. They allow you to decipher the location of footsteps, tripwire setters and locations of other noises that can allow you to home in on another player. Also they allow you to play early in the morning or anytime you want, without waking anyone up or disturbing the neighbors.

I was in the market for a sound card, primarily for gaming but i also listen to a lot of music and watch a lot movies so after doing lots of reading i ended up going with another option which was AV reciever. http://www.pioneer.eu/uk/products/62/98/405/VSX-527-K/page.html . I picked up a Pioneer VSX527 5.1 Reciever for the same price as a decent sound card and i am glad i did because i have so much control at the push of a remote control......pair a reciever up with a good set of speakers and what more do ya want?.You can then connect your Headset to the reciever, unless they are usb which could be tricky if the reciever hasnt got usb....I have 2 pc's connected to it with my gaming rig connected through Optical SPdif and pair of Wharfdale Diamond speakers for when im not on the headset and the sound is amazing..

After going this route i will never look to the sound card option ever again.....

My onboard of the laptop and desktops have stellar audio if only because the driver is solid and never crashes my games.   Having said that, I currently use a USB based Creative SoundBlaster Recon 3D when 'docked' at the home office.

I still use Sound Blaster Audigy ZS. Also has the front panel header. The Asus Maximus II, I still use has it's own dedicated sound card, like most high end boards, but I've always been entrenched with Creative Sound Blaster camp and have used those. I use the front panel constantly because it has coax, optic, FireW, MiDi, and others components, which have easy access. Rather fumbling with the rear I/O.

And I can even plug in my guitar using it as my amp. I am sure I will have to upgrade one day, but for now I think this is the only piece of hardware that has survived multiple platform builds.

I do prefer dedicated over integrated products on all components. But, I have always had a battery of Creative Labs products.

I have the old Logitech Z5500 5.1 speakers which pump 500W. The tv audio's fiber is connected to the Z5500. SO you might want to consider a nice console with your speakers which has coax and fiber connections too.
