The real reason for this is obvious. I looked carefully at all the pictures and did not see a single car in the color I want with the options I want. If the manufacturers would be more flexible the cars would sell!

It is amazing Johnny.  I think the age of the new car is slowly coming to an end. A new car is about the only large investment a person can make that quickly loses value and is practicaly worthless after a few years. When I was a kid growing up in the 60's a middle class home in the US could easily be bought for under $20,000, and it greatly increased in value. Now a decent car or pick-up truck costs around $50,000 and in 10 years it will be worth about %20 of what you originally paid for it.

Until about 2005 I bought a brand new truck or car every 3 years. My last new truck (2005 Ford Expedition) is still in my driveway and I've hated it practically since the day I bought it for almost $60,000. The quality of the materials is so poor and the cost of maintenance so high, I simply refuse to pay it any longer. As soon as I can afford it I'm going to buy a completely rebuilt Chevy K5 blazer from between 1970 and 1975. I love the style, i can buy one totally refurbished for under $20,000, and I can do all of the maintenance myself. There are no computers on it to go bad and they run forever.

Nobody wants to buy NEW cars because dealerships rip you off in maintenance.   They intentionally design the cars these days so that only they can work on it.  You have to go to them with wads of money to get it fixed.  You buy a 2012 model or newer and you will be hard pressed to do anything past brake pads and oil change on your own.

Old cars are cheap and are DESIGNED TO BE WORKED ON!!!

The old design mentality was "built to last".  But, these days the market is so saturated with products they can't design stuff to last forever because they wouldn't be able to keep selling new models.  New cars are designed to have a predictable life span that they can then follow up with the next model.  This mentality is actually mostly prevalent in the cell phone industry.

So right you are. It's called Planned Obsolescence, it's the norm in our world today. Some examples are:

Printer Ink cartridges

Video Games (Call of Duty 1-2-3-4-5)

Text Books

Clothing

Software (MS and Apple Operating Systems are great examples)

Cars

Every cell phone on the market today

Even light bulbs. The old light bulbs were cheap, but they could have been made to run forever. But where's the money in that? There is a fire station in San Francisco with a single light bulb that has been turned on for over 100 years.

Henry Ford had the right idea with his first cars. They quite literally ran forever and there are still thousands of them running today with the original engines nearly 100 years after they were made. Of course if all cars were like that nobody would buy new ones, which is why we have Planned Obsolescence in the first place.

WOW I am surprised that some of these cars have not been stolen and resold.

It must cost them a fortune just to provide security for these vehicles, just another example of the world gone mad..

They would sell if they made them more affordable for the average person, and then there's the auto dealers and their repair fees and do you trust them when they tell you that you have more problems than just the one you brought it in for.hmmmm..........

No they can't really charge any less for them. They have to pay the salaries of all of those union people with no more than a high school education a couple hundred thousand a year, then pay them 100% of their salary for the rest of their life when they retire at age 55.

If we could get all of those Chinese women and kids that make clothing for Target and Walmart to make our cars and sell them over the internet, a brand new SUV would cost like $5,000.

I have never, in my entire life, owned a brand new car....my wife is driving a 2002 Tahoe and I drive a 2004 Excursion...

I take care of them and they run and look just fine...I have no car payments and my insurance is cheap....a new car is probably the worst investment one can make these days...but they do it anyway cause it's stylin'...

The best deal I ever got on a car was when I was just living with my wife and she needed a car...I found a Plymouth for $50.00...ran great just had no parking gear or emergency brake so when she parked it she put a brick behind the wheel. (the brick came with the car no extra charge)

She drove it for a year and then she got something else....a friend of mine needed a car and I told him I would sell him the Plymouth for $75.00....he looked at me for a second and said "I was with you when you got it for 50"

So I sold it to him for 50. that was the best car ever.....

Very true. Never owned new myself. Just sold my 97 f150 for $3000 and paid $3000 4 years earlier. Was still in mint shape cause i care for my vehicles. Turned around and bought a 2002 Dodge truck. Slowly upgrading is better than buying new. New cars are the worst investment possible, but people still buy new with what has a lot to do with ego/pride, to keep up with the jones so to speak. Need to look good but i myself could care less. As you said, NO payment, Low insurance and can still work on the older ones somewhat..
