I have to respectfully disagree SOB. I think it's the Mustang. I guess we are both biased toward our respective countries However, to ease the pain of my insult, our Mustang did have a British designed Merlin up front Most of the Mustang Merlins had Packard Merlins in them. There was no way the Brits could produce enough Merlins to meet their demand and ours. So they were built in the U.S. by a auto manufacturer called Packard to meet U.S. demand. FYI - SOB, I freaking love the Spit. Awards

FYI - SOB, I freaking love the Spit. Well just to set the record straight Cod, i am not dissing any other planes or any other countries achievements, but this is what i base my opinion on, if it wasn't for the Spitfire winning the Battle of Britain your Mustang may not have ever saw any service, think about it, if we had lost the Battle of Britain in September 1940 the war in Europe was over, remember it was Britain and her Commonwealth that stood alone for over a year, with Britain out of the war Hitler had free reign in Africa, he would have moved uncontested into the Persian oilfields, he would have had as much fuel for his war machine that he ever would have needed,Persia (Iran) Borders Russia, Hitler could have attacked Russia at a time when he wanted maybe 2 months earlier then he did on the 22nd June 1941, that means he would have been at the gates of Moscow and Leningrad well before the snows came, remember all these extra troops and resources he had at his disposal in places like Norway and Africa because there was nobody left to fight, he would have taken both Moscow and Leningrad, We will never know the outcome but from stuff i have read and seen the Soviet Union was on the verge of collapse, remember too with Britain out of the war there would have been no aid convoys from Britain to Russia, Hitlers wins the war in Europe, what happens next we can only speculate but with nobody hindering his research and development of the Atomic bomb the Germans would probably have had it long before the USA, remember what the Germans were creating in the midst of total chaos the V2 rockets etc which was actually the forerunner to your space program because of all the German scientists you "seconded" lol to your country after the war (Google Wernher Von Braun amoungst many others) Maybe with all this going on your country may have made a deal with Japan over the oil embargo and Pearl Harbour may never have happened, we can only speculate on all this, knowing what we know about the respective Japanese and German leadership, war with the USA would still probably have happened, Japan would have had no soldiers lost fighting the British so again many more troops and resources at their disposal, they would have no doubt invaded and taken India and Burma USA would have been alone there would have been no invasion of North Africa or Europe because with Britain being out of the war there was nowhere to launch these attacks from, as i said it's all speculation Britain was at war September 1st 1939 our war lasted nearly 6 years, many of our major cities were in ruins, many other countries have great stories to tell which we never hear about because we don't have Hollywood, unfortunately nowadays lots of peoples history comes from Hollywood, which in most case stretches the truth too much, getting back to my original point the Spitfire won the Battle of Britain, without which no more WW2, therefore Spitfire, the plane that won WW2 and set the stage for the Mustang to reap havoc over the skies of Europe, i agree the later years of WW2 the Mustang was probably the best plane around but again that only happened because of the Spitfire winning the Battle of Britain and WW2 lol Edited November 3, 2014 by Sonovabich

Not even a kind word for Hawker? After all, the Hurricane shot down more German aircraft and was produced in more numbers during the Battle of Britain. Couldn't have been fun facing those 8 Browning 303s, and the plane was well loved by its' pilots. And she was powered by Rolls too.... Awards
