He's a nice one.  If he makes it until next year he will be a real dandy.  Looks like a 2 1/2 year old buck to me.

That's a nice buck.

I see mostly Mule Deer in this part of Montana but haven't seen as many this year . . yet . . .  .. The season is almost over and the big boys will be showing up.

They passed a new law here in Montana that if you hit a Deer you can pick it up and go buy a tag and keep it. I'm not sure if its a good thing because it makes it easier for poachers on the other hand good Deer meat (as long as you don't drive a big truck) won't go to waste

here in Canada, NS we hit the deer, we can take it home as long as you tell DNR guys, and must be dead of course   no tags needed

here in Manitoba it's against the law if you shoot a mule deer . thats if you ever see one. i have yet to see one . think there is some in the western part of our province.

It's kinda strange how one type of Deer will do so good in an area and another type of Deer disappears. I don't think food is the reason since Muleys and Whitetail will eat the same things. There are Whitetail Deer in my area but I don't see them too often, mostly Muleys. The ranch I work at (100 mi away) there are mostly Muleys until you get down by the Tongue River that's where Forest Mars (Mars Candy Bars)  has a ranch and HUGE Whitey's and Muleys both there. I think he must be putting out some feed with dope in it . . .lol

You are in Canada.  Do you consider it a 6 or 8 pointer (cant tell how many for sure) or a 4x4 which in B.C. we call a 4 point.

i shot a nice 4 point but in the states it would be a 8 point ( 4 each side ).

I guess there is a lot of different ways people describe how many points on a Bucks rack.

Just for shits and giggles here is a 4 point buck Mule Deer ( most Montana hunters use this term)

54741278353b1_Muledeerbuck.jpg

The brow tines (short points at the base of each antler) Can be counted as a point if they measure longer than 1 1/2"

This buck would be considered a "shooter" if I was hunting or guiding someone else based on the spread of the antlers extending well beyond the tip of his ears and the thickness of the beams. (not to mention one helluva Trophy Buck

But mostly we try and take the non typical deer that have antlers with unusual characteristics like points that point down or unbalanced with 3 points on one side and 4 on the other,  not only are they unique  but it helps to remove these unusual bucks from the gene pool.
