We recently bought a new house and I have unilaterally seized the basement to convert it into my own, man's cave. This is not just a generic man's cave.  It works based on Einstein's time/space relativity principles. Once you open the door you enter a new dimension, detaching  yourself from the events that are taking place upstairs: Wife making way too much noise, arguing with my kids, dog barking and so on.

I purchased a 60" inch Samsung 4K ultra HD LED blah blah blah TV and replaced my old Onkyo AV receiver with a brand new  Marantz 1200 watt 7.2 receiver. i had a 15" subwoofer from before and purchased a second 12" Polk Audio sub. I've got JBL speakers all around but still need to get a pair of ceiling speakers since I've gone from 5.1 to 7.2.

Sound and picture  are wonderful so far, but whenever I watch a movie with explosions or a concert the walls "rumble", which for me is pretty cool but not for my next door neighbor. She's a retired lady well into her 70's, who happens to believe the explosions are real. Maybe she's watching too much  Al Jazeera TV, who knows :-)

I need to figure out a way to sound proof my 16' x 9' cave. Budget at this point is a bit of a problem, but I am not downgrading. Any feedback would be highly appreciate it.

Thanks

Joe

The only way to slow down the transmission of the bass sound is a second wall structure that does not touch the other one and heavy insulation. When building sound room we offset double studs so the drywall for the opposing side is not attached to the same studs and there is at least a 1/4 inch between the stud and the drywall side for each other. Drywall acts like a diaphragm and vibrates the stud and is transmitted to the other side where it vibrates that drywall. Keeping bass quite is tough

Joe -  if you have any windows in the room that is probably the greatest source of sound transfer - try some heave curtains or insulation - if not send her a male moose -

Thanks bds. I was looking into that but I am not quite sure what type of insulation I should get. I've seen some ceiling tiles at Home Depot that might solve the ceiling issue at 1.95$ per square feet, but I'm not sure how to insulate the wall. Do I need to by drywall and insulation? Would plywood plus insulation work? Thanks

I have a glass door that leads to the back yard but no windows. I have a pair of thick curtains that I need to dig out. I was also thinking about buying arsenic or cyanide on ebay to poison her. I just need an alibi. Keep your male moose, just  be sensitive. Don't exploit it. :-)

To sound proof is easy... get them Egg Crate Foam mattress to make it more comfortable. Attach to wall flat side egg side facing out. Paint black or another color to make it look good. That should do it.

The sound tiles you were looking at can be bought in sheets of 4x8. It's sound board and is cheaper. I have used it to build into parting walls between adjoining rooms. Also good for making bulletin boards.
