Most of those 170 are just ideas where they threw a little seed money at. See which ones generate interest and which ones do not. Most dont. Also often to keep the rights to them so they are officially listed as 'pre-planning' or something like that if that is one of the contractual requirements.  The Fantastic Four was one of them so Marvel didnt get it back.

Then there is Star Wars and the up front four billion it cost them. They actually took a big chance on that considering the prequels. Luckily the first one was actually really good albeit an obvious remake of the first. But it could have been a bomb. Fortunately they have a huge amount of money to dip into from multiple sources but they are still multi-billion dollar gambles.  Most studios dont have that kind of money.  Studios also throw huge amounts of money at technology development. Some eventually works. A lot does not or turns out to be way too expensive to actually use.

From behind you can't tell the difference between a Moose or a Camel.

I still have not seen the new Star Wars. I am boycotting Hollywood.

Or Disney.. all the same.

Hollywood makes crappy stuff and it makes good stuff. You should not boycott the good stuff because you are upset at the presence of the crappy stuff. Might as well boycott good beer because the same parent corporation owns a company that makes shitty beer.
