Buy the filter to suit your needs. Higher-Merv filters, you should get one thicker, like 4 inches, to reduce stress on fan. (thicker filter, less resistance) A basic Merv 10 like this one filters out dust, pollen, mold spores, etc. I can really tell the difference. (The cat was being a distraction; so I gave him one, too. A piece of tape between the shoulder blades gave me the 5 minutes I needed). He wasn't very happy about it. By the way, this has been tested & found to be effective. After all, an air cleaner is basically these two components; just make sure it's sealed. Edited December 11, 2021 by Timmah! BUDMAN, TBB, Painsponge and 2 others 5 Awards

It will quickly overheat and burn up. Fucking POS thing barely blew any air to begin with. Ya I killed one by taping a good antimicrobial furnace filter to it. Bro, Merv rating 10 & under it's fine on 2/medium setting; Higher MERV values require a thicker (read deeper) filter... like 4 inches thick, instead of the basic 1 inch filter. Reason being, it greatly decreases the resistance & attendant load on the fan. It's a $20 fan, if it fails, will just return it. Awards

They've been running (the two I have) pretty much 24/7 for the past 8 months; taking the time to clean them when needed. He likes to lay a distance in front of them, at times, catching the airflow entering through the window. It's a pleasant white background noise, not unlike a dryer running. larrymc 1 Awards
