Is it possible to listen to voice chat without a microphone plugged in? I have voice chat enabled in cod4 options and my speakers set to the default sound in win10. But I never hear anyone talking

Shouldnt matter.  Not having mic plugged in can cause crashes depending on how your sound mixer is set up. But I cannot say whether or not that is limited to USB-only headsets.

Thanks for everyone's responses. I've got Win10, 2 monitors over HDMI and display port, monitors have built in speakers, and my headset plugged in to the front 3.5mm port. Voice chat is not heard on both the headset or monitor speakers. I hear all other game sounds, youtube videos, etc... Tried 3.5mm headphone jack on back of computer and I still don't hear voice chat.

Here's an image of my COD4 voice chat settings and Win10 Sound settings:

Hey Ranger, I was watching your youtube channel just now from your signature and saw Biggie UK talking and it showed the speaker icon. I never see the icon/name below the mini map, top-left. So I'm thinking something is weird with my install.

My game is downloaded from steam and it says I'm running patch v20.5. The only command I've used is the one to show FPS in the bottom right of my screen and "promod" from the H4X server (I don't think that does anything on XI).

Here's what I'm talking about with the speaker icon in the youtube video:

Patch v20.5 is cod4x. So at some point you must have joined a server with it installed. Your record level also shouldnt have a number next to it. Another sign that you got a patch somewhere. First recommendation, rename your current player config_mp file and let it autogenerate a new one. If that doesnt work, uninstall cod4x.

I removed my config_mp and it didn't help. I'll uninstall and re-install the game now. thanks!

I got it working! This is the first time its worked and i never really knew this game had voice chat natively. lol

Anyways, I think the root of the issue is whatever mic fix I had to do to a long time ago to get cod4 multiplayer to not crash on initial install. Jogged my memory when the new install of cod4 immediately crashes on multiplayer.

my audio is realtek, so I guess that's a common problem. I re-installed cod4 and followed the advice here of disabling front 3.5mm detection for realtek and I've got working voice chat:

thanks for everyone's help!

You're welcome. And yes, realtek sucks. Might we worth it to get a pci sound card. Doesnt have to be an expensive one. But one that has support for an amplified 3.5 front panel jack. Never had a problem with a crashing cod4 game using the front panel 3.5 jack non-usb set, and no mic, but I dont have realtek enabled. Just a simple asus card. My headset *with* the mic was both. 3.5 for audio and usb for the mic and in-line amp. But also no realtek.
