For all you Nascar fans out there, today is the 10th Anniversary of the passing of the late great Dale Earnhardt, Sr.  I know as a fan of his this day will never be far from my mind.  I still remember what I was doing at the time I got a call from my brother, who was there.  Racing will never be the same without him so heres to you Dale......3.

I was there too.  It was such a sad day for racing fans everywhere.  He wasn't my favorite driver but he was a great competitor and an asset to the sport.   3

The day 3 died took a lot out of NASCAR. He was no doubt the most popular and influential driver at the time. Since that time no one has risen from the driver ranks to take his place.

His death also started a concentrated safety move withing NASCAR. Mandating the Hans device for all drivers, the Car of Tomorrow, Safer Barriers at all tracks, and countless other programs and penalties that emphasized NASCAR's concern about safety.

Little did they realize that the emphasis on PUBLICIZING safety was detrimental to the sport. They are just now realizing their public emphasis on safety took away from the RISK appeal of the sport. It cost them fans.

Now safety is still there but is done quietly. The in race restrictions on drivers have been relaxed and notable by NASCARS "Have at it boy's" comment.

NASCAR fans want risk, they want thrill a minute racing, they want to see the drivers "trade paint". NASCAR has recognized this  and has loosened the reins and is not as public about safety measures.

Loosing 3 kick started the changes and the way it was handled did the sport no favors. 3 is probably rolling over in his grave over the reins placed on the drivers.

Let's hope we see a return to old school driving with safety taking a quiet but important place in the background.

As no one had put this up, I thought I would contribute this.

This program covers the entire day of events on February 18th 2001. From the sun rising over Daytona Beach to the grim announcment from Mike Helton - "We have lost Dale Earnhardt"

This is truly a great documentary and features interviews from Richard Childress, Darrell Waltrip, Michael Waltrip, Kenny Schrader, Mike Joy and more, enjoy!  "

Big KUDOS to Trevor Bayne on his unexpected and well deserved win. I really like seeing the kid win.

Special props to the old school Woods Brothers for their teams performance. Nice to see a team like theirs bring home the trophy.

I actually enjoyed the race and did not mind in the least the two car drafting.

All those lead changes and fender banging made the Daytona 500 a fun race to watch IMHO.

Too bad for Dale Jr. but he did give it a real good shot today and deserves credit for the effort.

The points thing with the Sprint and Nationwide could get interesting now that drivers have to decide in which series their points will count.

So Trevor Bayne who opted for his points to be accumulated in the Nationwide series earned 0 points for his Sprint Cup win.

The win must certainly help Trevor and the Woods team with sponsorships. Maybe they will run more Sprint Cup races than they originally had planned.

I don't think so.

The part was the safety gear that was not used back then like the drivers nowdays are using. When he smacked that wall, his head jearked forward so hard it fractured the neck and head right behind his ears which explaines why the one guy saw blood coming from his ears bad.

now day safety gears keeps their head from jerking around so much, walls are different too...

Michael Waltrip is forever messed up about this because he feels guilty about winning the race and lost his family due to his mixed emotions about that day.

I don't think so.

Says something about the man.

With all respect, really;

Do not forget Ayrton Senna.

I haven't ever seen Dale SR racing live (nor on TV). But after seeying those nice DVD's he got me. His personality seems like so simular as with Ayrton. I just finished the race and or but man, even though by email I saw the spoiler inside, what a great kid :). This will mark him for life. "Are you kidding me? Am I dreaming?" !

What a ... weekend!

And this was nice to see, not that she won though;

I was not there but I was watching it on tv, it didnt even look like that bad of a crash. when I heard it killed him I couldnt believe it. The Hans device he would not wear and was talking about it before the race, could have saved him.
