Just got a new video card in hopes of being able to play BF3.

video card - NVIDIA geForce GTX 560 (brand new - just got it a few days ago)

MOBO - Asus P7P55  (had for about a month)
CPU - Intel Core i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20 GHz (had for about a month)
RAM - 8 GB   (had for about a month)
OS - Windows 7 64-bit
have DirectX 11 (diagnostic says it is working fine)

Issues with BF3 (wasn't able to even run the game before i got the new VC)
Can You Run It? website says I can run BF3.
-sometimes sound will go away and i am left with a buzzing sound, then blue screen, comp restarts and hangs up on reboot.
-will spawn without any gear, then sound goes away, comp freezes up - ctrl-alt-del doesnt work
-sometimes spawn without gear but game doesnt crash, and gear appears after 30-40 sec.
-random comp restarts
i can play for maybe 5-20 minutes at a time.
ive tried playing without xfire.
tried IE, firefox, chrome.
drivers are up to date (v. 285.62). even tried the beta driver (v. 290.36)
tried the lowest video settings in game.
tried video card in different slot on mobo
tried reinstalling bf3
crashes happen on all servers and game types
tried reinstalling video card and drivers
tried the solutions in our BF3 forum but nothing works.
tried reinstalling PB

Issue with COD4 (never had any issue until I got the new VC)
Tried playing COD4.  Get CI's and video lag/freezes like never before.

no video problems except with the games.

I dont know what is wrong.  maybe my new video card doesnt want to work with the rest of my computer.

any ideas?

What was your old card?

ATI Radeon HD 4870 512 MB    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102810

had no issue with it and COD4.  Wouldn't run BF3.  game would tell me I need a new card, even with the updated drivers.  "can you run it" also said the old card didn't even meet minimum specs for BF3.

Did you do the ATI uninstall utility? Its sounds to me like you got other drivers in there. Another good place to look in in your event viewer.

i did not know about  that uninstall utility.

so i ran it just now.  but after restarting my comp, the utility still shows up in the list of programs, so im not sure if it actually did anything.

tried BF3 again after "running" the utility, and still got the same issues.  so i guess it didn't do anything.

not sure what i am looking for in the event viewer, or even where to look in it.

the only error i can find around the time of a comp crash is this:

Microsoft Antimalware Real-Time Protection feature has encountered an error and failed.

     Feature: Behavior Monitoring

     Error Code: 0x80004005

     Error description: Unspecified error

Reason: The filter driver requires an up-to-date engine in order to function. You must install the latest definition updates in order to enable real-time protection.

not sure about the specific error you show, but reminded me of something I remembered seeing a few days ago.. Several different antiviruses are seeing BF3 as a trojan. might try disabling any antivirus you have running.

You have both power supply cables hooked to the card? (Just a dumb question.) Check for the 6 pin and secondary two pin connector or a single 8 pin.

It definately sounds like bad drivers. Run the ATI driver uninstall and reboot. Load your new NVidia drivers and reboot. Hope and pray.

Check for compatibility between ram and videa card. You'll have to go to the mobo website. Adn as a side note 625watt PS might be a bit on the small side. ALWAYS Overkill on the power supply.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

I agree with dollar dog but I lean towards bad ram... I would try running all your ram separately to see if you can find a bad stick..

Nvidia's drivers have a clean install option but it will not clean ATI drivers. My guess is that you have leftovers from your old drivers.

I use Driver Sweeper when switching between ATI and Nvidia.

You can use gpu-z to see the cards temperature and EVGA Precision, MSI Afterburner or Nvidia Inspector to monitor and control the fan speed.

For your psu requirement, keep in mind that wattage is not the only thing to consider as the amperage requirement on the 12volt rail is more important.

ran Driver Sweeper.  removed all of the AMD driver stuff.

uninstalled the NVIDIA drivers.

restarted.

installed NVIDIA drivers and updated them.

ran the game, still had the same issues.

tried the beta driver, same issue.

also tried bf3 without antivirus program running, no luck.

the amps on the 12V rails is 25.  VC wants at least 24.

giving up for now.  gotta do other work.  will try testing the ram sticks later.

Check for compatibility between ram and videa card. You'll have to go to the mobo website.

what exactly am I looking for?  I am looking at the mobo and vc specs, and i am not sure what compatibility you are talking about.

How did you install the drivers?Only instal driver and physx,no HD audio. If the card was factory overclocked, try turning it down to stock speeds or bumping up the voltage a little bit.

I would try running driver sweeper to remove all ATI and nvidia drivers. But would also suggest doing this in safe mode. Also after doing so goto your c drive and delete any folders that say nvidia or ati as your computer will try and detect the software left on your computer to reinstall.

Also when checking ram stick by stick use the second dimm slot.  Say you have 4 dimm slots but only two sticks of ram you would put the mem sticks in slots 2 and 4 or if you had 3 sticks of ram and 6 dimm slots you would put the ram in slots 2-4-6.

If you want I can crossloop you and fix that for you. or I will give it a try. I bought driver cleaner. One of the best programs I have ever used. You most likely have old driver shit in your PC and it is conflicting. Best bet it to remove ALL the video drivers and start from scratch. Also check to see if your chip set is geforce compatible. Some mother board can do both, some cant. Hit me up with a PM as to a good time if you want to give the WiZiD a shot.....

I would have to say 4 things all related to hardware.

A - Power Supply no enough balls or bad.

B - Bad Ram (System)

C - Bad Vid Ram (Video Card)

D - Bad video card GPU - Resistor or similar electrode (I had a bad diode on a GTX 280 which caused some weird crap on screen).

I had the same problem.  its the Catalyst drivers that are causing the problems.  Im going to try to recreate so I can post it here.  The problem arises because the uninstall utility does not take out all the drivers, you also have to be in a dedicated admin loggin.  Ill try to remember and post here soon.  I have to go to work sorry.
