I've been playing COD2 on XI for a few years now, and in that time my ping started out between 50-60, the gradually increased to its usual 90-100. I've given up trying to figure out why. I did have AT&T DSL here in northern California and averaged 3.5 to 5 MBPS, then a few weeks ago switched to cable and my speed is now over 20 MBPS, and yet no change in my ping. I've taken the advice of other XI members, made changes to my setting, reasearched various web sites and still my ping stays the same.

So a couple weeks ago I got a brand new Toshiba PC for my office, and yesterday installed COD2. This thing is state of the art with all the bells and whistles, and a really big screen. I have AT&T DSL at my office and it's running between 5 and 6 MBPS consistently. I was excited to see the graphics were much better than what I was used to and everything is finally working great. Then I go to look at the ping, and notice that it's about 110.

I guess all of this boils down to that your ping rate has a lot more to do with your location than your settings. I'm sure tweaks can change it a little bit, but it's looking like where I am ultimately determines my ping, regardless of what type of broadband I use. I'm fine with it and can play, but I won't waste any more time trying to change something that obviously be changed.

i had the same prob all summer my good man....sometimes my ping would go up to 600...i narrowed it down to Bell Canada replacing their main fibre line between Windsor and Montreal...ever since they finished the main line my ping dropped down again...now that hurricane thingy boosted it back up to 60's,,after the line was fixed it went down to 32 or 40 max,,,so i guess what it boils down to .is if your isp wants to tell you about their re-routing when a main area goes down...because if i didnt' know a Bell tech personally i would have never found out...all those calls to my isp when all it took to do is ask a bud...deceiving fuckers those Bell idiots

You are correct ping is about location. Think of ping as a "radar ping". Its the amount of time it takes your signal to reach its destination and return. Tweaking settings can help drop your ping a little, but very little if any. Your ping can go up for several reasons, one being "traffic". All cable , dsl users acess "nodes". Think of node as a big ass router that handles different households. If your the only household on that node at a given point your ping theorectically will be lower. You may be experiencing more users on your local node then in previous years. Also the adding of cable lines in your area and others close by can cause signals to be re-routed differently then before. Im in Midwest Ohio and fairly close to the servers and Im lucky to be in the booneys with a node 100 yards from me (not many users either). So my ping is fairly consistant and low. Now there are other COD2 players that live around the Cincy area (75 miles south of me) and farther away from the servers, YET, their ping is half of mine. Its because they have a straight shot to Chicago, were as even though Im closer, my signal zigs zags. So there are many variables.

another factor is the routing between you and the game server. look at me and window. we live about 5 miles apart but his ping is normally half of mine on the XI servers. i think window's provider has their servers in the chicago area while mine is either downstate illinois or missouri. this means if the game server is in chicago, windows provider is close but i have to get routed downstate and back. if you are really curious, you can do a traceroute to the game server IP and see all the switching delays between you and the server.

It's just the routing, sort of like driving your car and taking the fastest route or scenic route except you ain't driving the car.

Since Hxtr will blow anyone who asks, it doesn't matter.

pops heres a problem that i found.....I was with one company who have over sold there bandwidth and are stuffing it threw one server so its kinda like having a 8 lane highway and reducing it to a single lane tunnel and when its rush hour fucking forget it.....so moved to a new isp who is still growing and my ping got way better and not dropping packets etc.... but the real pisser is fios is 1 block over and I cant use it cause they will not run line into my neighborhood yet .....do a ping test on different servers and compare rates

My service provider (Virgin) is currently giving all their customers a FREE ! bandwidth upgrade - in my case up from 20MB to 60MB, problem is, now the fibre optic cable I'm on is now overloaded so at peak times my ping somtimes vary's wildly from it's normal 112 to anything up to 290-300.

Virgin say they are working on the problem and are going to switch me to another cable/node/mode? thingy.

Fingers crossed.

Regards JT/Chris

If all you gays in Cali weren't so busy pinging each other's butts you might get better IP support and have a lower game ping.

No doubt, there are many of them out here but they prefer something live unlike Wisconsiners who prefer pinging a block of cheese. :welcome:
