The reason for the upgrade mostly is for the dx11 support and more eye candy. Power is not an issue. What are your recomondations the 5870's or the 5970. 5870's are very easy to come by, but a waiting list on the 5970's. I have found that only a handfull of boards will go either way. Most of them are specific to GeForce or ATI. Where you now are in SLI (GeForce) and would like to go to ATI changing the software that was not meant for you board would not be wise. It may work at first but you could run into problems.
