rebuilding my 30rh trans

So i dropped the trans out of my 2000 jeep wrangler  2.5  . degreased and power washed it all up.  going to be doing the rebuild myself, got my ATSG manual and found a you tube video series on how to tear down and rebuild step by step. getting what i need together and getting a spot cleared out in the garage to make a "clean room".

before i make my order on a rebuild kit was wondering if any out there have any recommendations on where or what kit to buy, been looking into this and im looking at getting the "rebuild in a box" from makco transmission parts.  http://www.makcotransmissionparts.com/12006G-BOX-1.html. 

i know some will ask so here is what i know of this trans/jeep:my brother bought it new and he is a lead foot!  it has 90k miles when the engine blew, and right before that the trans was starting to slip. thats why im doing the rebuild, could be a little thing why it's slipping, but since the engine is out i figured just to get it rebuilt, all the trans shops around here want $800 plus to rebuild it and since money is tight, i figure ill save some cash

well the trans was shifting bad before the engine blew up so i figure just get it done and not have any issues down the road, plus the pump is inside the trans and is part of the rebuild kit.

don't know whats up with the link, but it was big rebuild kit with all the Solenoids,bands, sprag bearings,gaskets and o-rings, should run another 90k no problem. plus im not a lead foot like my brother is, i got to do all that on the race track!

need to check the rear band is a single wide or 2 piece when ordering kit also rebuild or replace torque converter with a higher stall

 

cryco torque converters are notorious eccentric.  get a good trans pliers one with double acting scissor to spread and a snap ring tool with flat end and V cut  onside

 

when packing clutch packs leave a .050 clearance to snap ring and the band .020 clearance

 

next is valvebody  explain how was shifting and were the shift points correct ?

or fix it right with bolting a B&M 700R4 behind the motor

 

forgot to say pre-soak the clutches in trans oil and flush out oil cooler or use external cooler

- are you talking about doing the air test where you plug off vent and put a torque converter hub seal cup over the input shaft, and put 8psi into the rear cooler line? don't have those items to get it done, and to fabricate them will be a bit time consuming,(the ATSG manual shows how to fabricate them). if this is something you think i "must" do i guess ill get it done?

- I'll check the bands for sizes before ordering and soak them plates

- I did pick up a nice pair of channel lock internal/external pliers

- as far as the valve body, talked to my brother and he said he was having issues with 2nd gear slipping and popping back into 1-3 gears, at least that's what he remembers(it's been setting in the garage for 5 years)

- that link is going no where and what is a B&M 700r4?

- i will be picking up an external cooler and a syjacker deep pan also

-thinking about getting the rebuild in the box from makco (link) unless you think that's over kill? or if i should buy from some place else?

lol. that's what it looks like now with no engine/drivetrain in it!

that test for lock clutch, I'm taking 1/8 plugs on side of case near pan flange

 

you need to fix  #2 clutch  servo is leaking .....bad seal or cracked cavitity

yes hemps the kit is all you need provided that pump is good plus I see they added the shift kit in there too

got it all a part, wasn't bad at all, really not much to this 30rh compared to what ive seen on other trans, took my time and took pics and video of every part that came out.

like i said couldn't find a new pump gears, but the old one look good and are all smooth and move freely.

even the rebuild pumps don't come with pump gears, doh.

Engines V8, V6 ATV, dirt bike I can do but when it comes to an Automatic Transmission I seek help. The modern AT is complicated and intimidating for me only because I have never assisted anyone doing a rebuild to show me what the hell is going on.

 

The guys that came up with the idea and then built the first auto trans drank more coffee than is healthy.

lol  it's my 1st on a 30RH trans, not my 30th time.....idiot!   the 30RH/A904  im told is one of the easier ones to do. so im giving it a shot to save some cash and just to give it a try. I've rebuilt 2/stroke engines a bunch of times and enjoyed it, use to race this cars with a 600 twin polaris snowmoble engines, 1000 pound cars with 140-160 hp. even had to tear one down when it blew up at the track and rebuilt it in the pits and got out on the track in 40 mins to win the feature race.

 

I don't race anymore but here's a couple pics of my buddies car. all the body panels, front wing and tires are off and the engine is out of it getting ready for a rebuild. built this things ourselves. lots of fun.

I am just completing a project that's no where near the racing machine you have here but Its a blast to drive.

I only have 1 pic and its the first prototype with the Polaris 250cc engine in it.

I found out quick that it wasn't (quick)

 

So i rebuilt an old Polaris 400 liquid cooled engine and I am just finishing it up . Its at the ranch I work at because there are miles of dirt roads to drive on and tuning the carb is easier there. I will post some pics when I get done.

 

also at the ranch we are building a razor with a 3 cylinder turbo charged Yamaha snowmobile engine that is supposed to make 200+ HP

 

What is the top speed of  the car in the pics above?

I love the variable speed belt drives with comet clutches  lots of tweaking choices

 

 

note hemps the springs in clutch packs  aren't all same  so keep them together with CP's when cleaning

very nice! always wanted to build an off roader myself. looks like it would be lots of fun!

we got this going around 150-155mph on the straight away at blackhawk farms road course, we are skirting up the bottom of the car better and making it more aerodynamic and hope to get more out of it.

also my friend is a wizz when it comes to clutching and gearing, you be surprised what you can get out of the motor when done right. we ran against guys with more power and lots of money in there stuff and smoked them with a stock motor down the straights.

note hemps the springs in clutch packs  aren't all same  so keep them together with CP's when cleaning

yep, they all very different from each other. one is a flat piston spring and the other is one regular type spring. also ordered a couple bushing tools, wish i still had my lathe , would of made the bushing tools.

i wanted to do this, plus save some cash if it goes well. hopefully all done now, really wasn't to bad.... just got to order the long block and get all all that put together then put it in the jeep

@KaptCrunch  i took the valve body back off and shot air threw the clutch holes, heared them engagin

 

those where the two holes i put air into and hear the clutches engage

Good luck Hemps, I have confidence in you and your abilities to take things apart . .  it's putting them back together I have doubts  . . lol

 

At least its a 2.5 so the trans isn't subject to a huge amount of HP . . . . and remember if you don't have parts left over you didn't do it right .. .  .Har!

wow, family throwing auto work at me now, just did a air compressor for my dads dodge caravan today. not too bad, got it done and working. and now my brother needs a new power steering pump and a knock sensor on his 2002 xterra, of course the KS is under the intake manifold... pepboys said they charge him $1500 to fix it all. so now i'm doing it, hehe , oh well, i told him he'll have to buy a couple parts for my jeep since ill be saving him some cash.

yep, did that. had to do this before so i have the gauge set and the vacuum pump

all done! welded an oil plug on the pan, and then bolted it on the trans, now im going to order the new long block next week and get started on that.
