Killed a really nice “speed goat” yesterday. Second one in a ten year period. He was a brawler, broken horn tip and both his ears had rips in them!

I shoot a Remington 798 in .270 Winchester 130 grain, at about 230 yard shot.

Antelope are in most of the Western states, in the high desert areas. I've seen them as high as 8,000 feet. I now have a 3 year waiting period before I can put in for the tag lottery. I've seen huge herds in Wyoming, they practically give them out there. I do live in northern Nevada, which is all high desert,

assume gun sparky seen a 30-30  Vs 270 both shot at a 12" dia maple tree and the 270 went through 30-30 failed about 4-5" penetration.

Weed so less damage with 30-30

I don't think that Pronhorns are made out of maple

Even I know this one, although Weed never mentioned a calibre as far as I can see

You are correct a 270 carries more velocity and a flatter trajectory, perfect for long ranges, which is probably why Sparkshunter chose it?? Perfect for where he shoots, no trees or undergrowth

But it isn't the best for short distances, such as trees or undergrowth as it may be too powerful and pass straight through without dumping all it's energy into the kill and merely wounding. 30-30 may not have the penetration but it will have the killing power.

Am I correct boys, you hunt more than me??

Yes , this is one of the better calibers for this type of hunting. It will shoot a lot further than I am comfortable at range. Didn't realize how hard it is to shoot off bipod shooting sticks, holding steady, holding my breath. Was much easier when I was younger!!

So was everything else mate, enjoy it as long as you can, by the way try a tripod, big difference to a bipod you can get some fairly light ones using modern materials.

A great 100 year old caliber! All these new calibers are just to promote sales. All the 3006 caliber spin offs were and are great!
