looking to upgrade my vid card ( since tax season is on us) and wondering what the tekkies might recommend. I have a store bought HP pavillion a6500f system. It has the nvidia geforcve 7100, which i am finding out is rather outdated. A friend of mine at work said something to the effect that i need one that matches my power supply? I'm totally a noob about stuff like that so.....any comments would be helpful. Also, i've looked online at some of the pricing....i dont think my cheap ass is willing to spend no 250 to 400 dollars but i'm such an asshole i want sometjing that kicks ass for low dollars. Is there any hope for me (please do not respond to that question SOB....we know the answer m8).

Well you can also update your power supply too, they don't cost too much, if you want a half decent card you will probably need more powerSmile

Y

Like up above poster are speaking the truth...first, you got to make sure to get enough powa...a new power supply!!! 600-650 watts and of a good brand, not no-name crapiola...also, you have to make sure it will be compatible with that proprietary motherboard...

Like TSW said, a GTX260 (second-hand) is a good idea, a Radeon HD5770 (smaller cooler, less power hungry) is another option...nVidia GTX460, Radeon HD 6850...

I have a HP 7600 computer. I put a new video card in it and I have the old one which is a GeoForce Nividia 9600 GTS. If you want it you can have it, or if someone else wants it. I had a liitle trouble mating up the slots with it, that happens when you get older and are on 14 prescriptions. lol

It is a little over a year old. It worked when I put it back in the box about 9 months ago. Just send me a pm and I will get it to you or anybody else that wants it. I have a brand new basic HP keyboard if anybody it too.

For $250 you could be kicking ass in almost any game. Please note that if you systems chip set is Gforce you may want to stay with that.  Here are a couple suggestions.

I agree with the video card great choice.  For a power supply you could get away with a 500 watt with out any issues. Your not running anything in your box that needs much juice. There's lots in th e50 buck range. And you will need a power supply yours is 250 watts you'd kill it quick with a newer vid card.

I disagree as I feel that the power supply is the back bone for the whole computer.

"I disagree as I feel that the power supply is the back bone for the whole computer."

I agree here. It's best to over power your computer. It will handle power spikes and such much better. If you upgrade your card READ THE POWER CONSUMPTION SPECS along with what connectors it has. Some OE PC don't have all the needed wires.

Go to MaximiumPC website and look at the Best of the Best tab. It has groupings like Best High Dollar, Best Midrange, and Best Budget cards. Some budget cards have excellent performance.  They also have reviews and writeups for everything PC.

Nice set up Wizid but some of the older mother boards do not play well with the newer 2.1 PCI-e GPU cards. As for the power supply the Corsair 750w is one of the best in the market. Since he dose not want to spend a lot of money I recommend going a different way look for a Corsair or OCZ in the 500 to 600w range and you might want to try an 8800GT or an ATI  3850 neither of these cards will pull to much power if you feel like more power then go for something like a 9800gt or an ATI 4850 and they will do circles around your intergrated  7100 vga most of these items can be found on eBay for cheap just my 2 cents

One other thing , is make sure you have enough room in the case , some of the new cards are a little long. And yes you will need a good power supply , NOT A CHEAP ONE..

With power supplies you have to remember that they degrade over time,so if you start out borderline you'll have problems later.Always get more power than you need.
