Well, i found myself in need of new storage disks,

i have like 10 disks almost full and i cant stand it anymore.

i need to clean all this asap

so i was thinking to get me a NAS with enough room for like 4T

thing is i dont have much budget and from my memory, last time i checked, a nas was really expensive.

now i find 2 of them that are pretty cheap and seems to do the job

anyone here have any experience with a nas that could help me picking the right one ?

here are the 2 :

D-Link DNS-320

NETGEAR RND2000-200NAS Diskless System ReadyNAS Duo v2

I used to run the UK channel for LG NAS devices and have sold Enterprise NAS soln for the past 6 years!

From the ones you've selected, I would suggest

1) NetGear

2) Synology

I'd probably look for a 4bay unit myself .... more disks = better RAID protection and faster access times ...

so 4 x 1TB disk or 4 x 2TB disk ... think about data growth / and also sprawl ...

and maybe, buy something to back it up

Both the models above are diskless - so factor in cost of HDD to prices shown.

Pretty straight forward stuff .... check out website for support on each, both a pretty good with support over here.

Just using it for add storage or any other purpose?

Pretty niffty some if these NAS drives now ... with the LG one, put all your movies, music, pictures, porn whatever on it .. connect to your router ...access the information ANYWHERE you have internet access!!! Think Synology and Netgear offer this ... just that LG have an "app" for theirs .... EVERYONE will have one in the near future, excellnt peice of equip.

ty guyz

i would like to use it for backup of my works / datas mostly

i have tons of datas that i need to store, back up and use for different work.

thing is i plan to also use a cloud storage so i could backup everything twice for better security.

there is a new cloud service from a french company that i know for years that is in beta now but seems pretty competitive (its like 70€/year for unlimited space) <- i will use this when they go out of beta and allow full speed because its now caped and too slow.

i dont have the money for more than a 2 bays nas (for now)

and i would also like to store videos so i could share them on every computer, tvs in the house, that would be a +, but its not what i want this for.

that also means i should spare a bit more money to be able to buy it, oh well

Backup wise, know that Disks Fail (MTBF) ...... better to have a Blu-ray burner or similar

Loose movie, no big problem .. loose music, no big problem .... loose pictures of friends, kids, family !! = fucked.

Back unimportant stuff to disk ... everything else to removable storage ... USB, CDRW, DVDRW, Blu-Ray etc

im not sure i can trust blu rays or dvd as storage. they all fail after some time too.

btw how much can u store on a blu ray ?

thats why i was thinking more like having datats backups at 2 different places + the fact that i need access to some files at anytime

i really think im gona go for that synlogy and if 1 is not enough, i could just buy another one

A single-layer disc can hold 25GB.

A dual-layer disc can hold 50GB.

To ensure that the Blu-ray Disc format is easily extendable (future-proof) it also includes support for multi-layer discs, which should allow the storage capacity to be increased to 100GB-200GB (25GB per layer) in the future simply by adding more layers to the discs.

I use a dlink 323 works great for storage. Where the cheap one will lack is using them for media streaming they don't do a great job of being a server. When you use one you have to keep in mind what type of raid your going to use. Read up on that very important to know that to be redundant on a nas you will really need a 4 bay unit. 2 bay units simple do not give you the redundancy and storgae you think you will need. I use a jobd raid and that 2 2 tb so I have 4 tb of stge. Another thing is alot of nas will use the smallest HD size as your double. so if you use a 5oo gig and a 1tb HD it will only see 2 5oo gig HD. Get compicated I guess. Now for cloud Stge . Microsoft gives you 25 gig for free. Not sure what your looking at but remember unlimited cloud storge means you have to get thet info up to the cloud. A TB of data could take you years to get it up there depending on your bandwith. I would advise you to use cloud stge for what really important and back your data up on external HD for the big stuff.
