I think he is great but I dont think he is the best we have every seen. Some amazing athletes have made their way through the Olympics so it is very hard to say he is the best. Plus he is a medal whore. hahahahaha

Congrats to all the winners. If the Olympics was not so commercialized it would be way better and I probably would care more.

Probable problem is that the Olympics, and even less swimming, do not hold most Yanks attention like professional sports.

The Olympics are nice but simply do not generate the passion of professional sport, or even team college sport for that matter. It seems that here American Football, Baseball, Basketball and Ice Hockey dominate the consciousness. In many most cases either college or pro.

The Olympics are nice but not highly relevant. Even less in some cases depending on the event. Swimming no doubt has more relevance in Australia than here. Also a lot depends on what the media chooses to promote. Never overlook the power of the media.

Personally I found more pleasure in the success of Gabby Douglas, she will be the American superstar, media darling, of the Olympics on the American side. Her personality and looks certainly do not hurt the popularity.

He's a local boy for me too, a real BALTIMORon. And he just won another Gold today, what does that make 21 total and 17 gold? Phenomenal achiever.

Shooter you are talking about a mythical legion. That is something no human can compete with. Besides if he was real and if the legion is true he was not human so what does it matter anyway? Phelps did a lot of damage to his image here when he let himself be filmed taking a hit. Now mind you I didn't care if he did but the media had a field day with it. And so goes the legion of Michael Phelps one of the most prolific Olympic champions we have ever seen in our day and time!

can he run really fast... jump super high. He is just faster than other swimmers. Sorry.. i think gymnastics deserves way more credit for performance than any of the rest. Ice skating second i guess.

i didn't mean to upsaid you. :D just a practical joke. he's indeed one of the greatest sportsman of this age. maybe even the greatest. but...i do think it's all overrated. ok 19 medals and 3 times in a row gold medal on the same subject. ok he's good i admit it. but why does the media explain it like he brought world peace???

When a guy dominates as much as he has in a sport that uses every muscle of the body, and must be used efficiently and in perfect sync with each other, I would have to say he is an amazing athlete. On par with any of the greatest athletes in the worlds history. Im always proud to see a Yank on top, but like Shamu stated Im a little more of a pro sports guy. The rivalries are a little more constant and a little more fresh than our competitions with other nations every couple of years.

Personally, in my ever so humble opinion, the best athlete will be the winner of the Decathlon.

The Decathlon personifies the Olympics and the proficiency of an "Athlete". Skilled in multiple events and not just exceptional in one.

It is a grueling test won by true "Athletes".

By no means do I mean to lessen each individuals accomplishment in the sport of their choice but I just have a great respect for an individual skilled in multiple events and not a specialist in one.

To me the Decathlon most represents the spirit of the Olympics.

The reference to the popularity of professional sports is offered as one of the reasons his accomplishments may not get the attention you might expect. You asked "does anybody cared over there?". It's one possible explanation why we don't seem to care. Simply an answer to a question you asked. :welcome:

I understand your point SOB... I just have a hard time thinking Phelps is the fastest swimmer or best Olympian the games have ever seen. 21 medals is great.... what an accomplishment for sure and to say otherwise is ignorant (i fit that bill most of the time.. lol).

I just think their are lots of sports that require lots of talent. I don't care if they are from Russia, US, UK or China.... I want to see the best athletes from all countries. Our heads over hear are big enough and that number 21 is a marketing number. I did not earn that nor did the USA. That team and Phelps won them. I don't get into to the... our country won this.. and we got that. It is no different than someone loving the Dallas Cowboys, and the other guy hatting the Dallas Cowboys.

Originally was trying to say this....

Would Phelps beat all the past Gold Medal winning swimming teams if they all competed today? Is Phelps the Michael Jordan of swimming? There will only be one MJ, will we see another Phelps?

But I am proud of him.... and I will watch him tonight at 7pm central win his 22 medal and possibly his18th gold. Us all talking about this and hearing it on the news is getting me excited..... so the marketing is even working on me now. lol

Yes he would because they are all old like everyone reading this post.

Would he beat them even if they weren't old of course, that's why he has world records, look at the times.

Would he beat them even if they had the same competition and swimsuits he has, well maybe not but we will never find out.

disagree... bring Phelps back to their time and see how well he performs from their training and lack of technologies.

HXTR how can you make comparisons of athletes from different sports to begin with? Swimming vs. Basketball? Phelps won his medals by intensive training and dedication. You can’t compare today’s technologies to the pasts. It is what it is. World records will continue to be broken with dedicated athletes such as Phelps. He deserves our respect, not a ho-hum that you gave him.

Probable problem is that the Olympics, and even less swimming, do not hold most Yanks attention like professional sports.

Personally I found more pleasure in the success of Gabby Douglas, she will be the American superstar, media darling, of the Olympics on the American side. Her personality and looks certainly do not hurt the popularity.

Well lets put it this way, he is statistically the best sport person ever in the world. No-one has won that many medals/cups/trophys as he has. I am in awe of his abilities and accomplishments.

How many Olympic sports out there give one athlete so many chances to get metals like swimming does? it seems swimming got way more then other olympic sports.

i would say for sure he is the greatest swimmer ever. but the greatest sports person ever........maybe?

I agree.... I just wont put him in a category of the best the Olympics has ever seen 17/18 gold or not. That goes way to far IMO. The Olympics has seen some amazing athletic ability from all over.

The training is the key and his dedication to the sport is why he won.. i agree and it took lots of money to make this happen. Technology helped him train which was not the same 20 years ago.

But he is a great swimmer because he smoked pot. Thats the real reason. hahahaha Remember how they smeared him when that came out way way back.

He is cool..... but he is not all that. At least Michael Jordan tried to play baseball. hahaahahhahahaha
