I can't hear the sounds in my computer any more... I can nearly hear anything... Soft ding when i change the volume to the max. It used to be so loud.... I'm hoping it is just a simple software tweak, cause it is not connected to the internet, and won't be for a bit yet.

Any ideas?

LOC there are two settings you want to check. First you must make sure you are checking your speaker volume. If you aren't then you may miss the volume control. If you are then it's probably a driver Idk exactly! Both controls are listed together but may be a little confusing as they are to this idiot! When you get to the right ones check your levels and that changes your volume output. Good luck with this challenge. You may have already done this and I don't mean to tell you something you don't already know it's just I have that same problem and this is what I found out via research! :)

Thanks guys for your suggestions... perhaps i left a lot of info out... so here gores again...

I can bearly hear my sounds.  I have an inline controler on my headset, (no speakers installed as they are in storage) Last week it was fine, listened to DVD's, p[layed games no prob.

I checked the volume contrrol in the system tray, and it is maxed out.  I went to the control panel and and under hardware and sound i click manage audio devices, and it tells me the microsoft live chat head set is working properly...

I have had this problem before, but don't know how i figured it out.  Getting old sucks!

@@Damage, your comment about turning up the Wave all the way up.  um... i am in windows 7 pro.   So, when you say double click Volume .. do you mean the sound icon in the system tray?  I cant seem to find the Wave contorl setting...

Thanks for the help guys!

Sorry Krunch... it is my desk top and it is not connected to the internet... so i cannot go search for a new driver.  When i get home i will check what kind of sound i am using.  I dont think i bought a soundcard when i got my new rig last year, so it would be on board sound i believe.

You should test for sound with a pair of speakers.

I can bearly hear my sounds.  I have an inline controler on my headset, (no speakers installed as they are in storage) Last week it was fine, listened to DVD's, p[layed games no prob

This now can be your headset or the plug that you plug your headset into. I'm guessing you have 2 places to plug into try them both. And try them with something other than your headset as well.

When you click once on the sound icon in the sys-tray you can open the mixer. You can control the volume of many programs seperately:

(on windows XP a double click opens the mixer)

Really appreciate all your help. Some other perhaps pertinent info.... That little green bar that indicates level in the sound icon... Well it never gets very high, actually it stays very close to the bottom, even with the slider all the way at the top. I am at a loss to understand it. It moves a little, indicating there is sound present, but not enuf for me to actually hear anything substantive.

I think it's better to have a closer look on it with Teamviewer.

I am online in 3 or 4 hours (11pm/12am CEST) or from tomorrow afternoon - will be morning/forenoon for you and a bit better for me. (*yay* national holiday)

It shouldn't take too long.

Ty for the offer, but remember I do not have it hooked up to the internet. No connections available.

Ok back to topic ^^

Do you use a PC or a Notebook?
What model is the Asus sound card?  I know that they have many driver problems.

If it is a PC: Is there a second sound device like an NVIDIA video card with HDMI audio?

Are you listening with external speakers (Stereo, 2.1 , 5.1 etc.) or with a head set?

Is a microphone connected? <- i ask this question because there is a setting within the windows onboard sound control to reduce the volume if any communication activity is detected.
(it is not completely deactivated, though you use another software) If  a mic is connected -or an internal mic if you use a notebook- and it is permanently active, it will reduce the volume up to 80%

Go to your Control Panel -> Sound -> tab "Communications"

524f24593283c_sound.gif

And if there is no mic connectec, take a look  at the "Recording" tab if there is an option like "Stereo-Mix", "What you hear", "Wave" or something like that is
set as default recording device.

Just one of many possibillities...

Thanks so much for all your help. @Labob you were bang on. Tks! It was the bloody headset after all. Took the CPU and headphones to local shop. They checked it for free! So I went and got me a 10$ set of headphones.
