Move closer to Chicago and then your ping will be lower. Where do you live now and do you have dsl or cable?

Those are neat toys but they wont get your ping even close to 60 from 120, its all about location like rugger said.

There are things your ISP can do to reduce your ping but is it worth it?  Ping tests show a figure of 37ms for me locally but I regularly hit 150-160ms on the XI servers - as has been said, it is a matter of distance so you'll have to rely on that superior skill against players who benefit from a lower figure!Laughing

I agree with everyone else, my ping fluctuates and I am in Florida, some of it is due to location and some is my system :(

I guess you can say in your local network your ping can vary maybe 10ms, from your modem to the server cant really be changed unless your a good network hacker and can choose your own hubs & switches across the US that the connection travels thru.

high ping can be cause by distance from your computer to modem, modem to isp, isp to server

but also something wrong in your windows settings, or a bad cable, or the server,...

its not only the distance between you and the server.

in game like cod2 or cod4, u can customize your config to find the 'sweet spot', so that the communications between you and the server can be better.

first thing to do is set your FPS right seta cg_drawFPS "Simple"

go play and note your lowest frame rate

best is to cape the fps with 55, 76 or 125.

those are the sweet spot for FPS in cod games.

Set cl_maxpackets and com_maxfps to this number

e.g.

seta cl_maxpackets "55"

seta com_maxfps "55"

This optimizes your communication settings.

You can also change your proxy settings to a chicago address this could make your ping significantly lower.

Try to route all cat5 or network cables away from electrical and power cables.

Do you use a router? Mine add 40ms to my ping. Look at the newer gaming routers if needed.

Stay away from "supplied" networking programs. Sierra wireless program adds 100 ms to my ping. Had to buy a cradlepoint router to avoid this hit. (some routers can bypass proprietory software. Seirra or Sprint routes your signal through their towers and not neccessarily the quickest way).

Use asshort of a cat5 cable as you can. Wont help much but every sec counts.

Get a trace route program, learn to read it and adjust as needed.

Use a good firewall that allows a gaming config. This shuts down all traffic except the gaming ports you need. Kinda hard to configure but well worth the effort. Good for about 15 ms on my system.

Move to Chicago. Expensive but the best way  to reduce you ping.

When I first started playing on the site, my ping was around 190-200. I now connect at about 90-110 using Sprint wireles. My biggest hit is from Sherman Texas to Dallas. It's all wireless untill my signal hits Dallas then it goes wired. 20ms from Dallas to Chicago, 20 thru my system and 60 from my house to the tower and to Dallas.

Iwould go DSL but its not offered in my area.

Anyway sorry for the long post but I hope it helps.
