A 22 caliber pistol is the best thing for bears. One shot to your buddies new and your safe

The jingling bells only signal the bears that it's dinner time, and they use the pepper spray you're carrying to season your still-steaming corpse.

The thing that makes me feel safe whilst traipsing through bear-infested Alaskan woods is carrying my Remington semi-automatic .30-06 rifle with a fully-loaded 10-round clip (with 220 grain soft-point bullets) and an extra 10-round mag in my pocket.  Pity the poor (bear) fool that hopes to fatten up for the winter using calories and fat gained from the likes of Ayaq Guyaq.

If one succeeds, though, he'd probably have enough to sustain himself for two winters on my lifeless corpse.  Lol.  Ayaq

My preferred Bear deterrent would be the S&W 500 that shoots a bullet weighing 350 gr with over 3000 ft lbs of muzzle energy.

The best part of using this "man sized" pistol as a deterrent is most of the time you don't even have to pull the trigger . . . ..  .The bear takes a good look at the size of the opening in the barrel and he is outta there.  . .lol

To shoot a bear you need a penetrating round. Hollow points will expand in there outer fat and gristle. A head shot can be hazardous to. There have been some cases where a direct head shot grazed off of the skull not putting the bear down. The side arm I carried for bear was a 44 magnum with 300 grain solid copper slugs

Where should you shoot the bear? In the mouth, nose, and jaw. If you remove its jaws it cannot eat you. Make sure you are using a large caliber weapon, 9mm will take 200 rounds to remove the jaw. I recommend an elephant gun. 1 shot and that bear is dead. If that first shot didn't stop the bear the second shot will.

If you are shooting a bear with a handgun you allowed yourself to get to close to it...Any handgun being used to shoot at a bear needs to be of a caliber that at least starts with a 4...IE..40, .44, .45...

I agree with bds1961 that carrying any weapon loaded with "hollow point" rounds in bear country is unwise.  I don't know if he was referring to my mention of the adjective "soft point."

The only round I use for big game in Alaska (come on, it's time to address the elephant in the room:  everything may be bigger in Texas, but everything is BIGGEST in Alaska--biggest bears, biggest deer (moose), biggest halibut, salmon, crab, and other fish species, tallest mountains, biggest mosquitos, etc.) is the Remington Core-Lokt (trademark) soft point bullet because it travels easily through tissue and mushrooms--doesn't disintegrate, mushrooms--on impact with bone to transfer the rest of the bullet's kinetic energy.  I really don't know how many thousands--yes, thousands--of pounds of meat I've "harvested (that's the term we use in Alaska)" for friends and family over the years.

My dad, older brother (deceased and a former U.S. Army Airborne paratrooper), and brother-in-law couldn't believe some of the shots I've made.  Ironically, I play like a methamphetamine-crazed attacker (no, I'm not on meth, I just play like I am, even though I've never, ever wanted to try meth) in first-person shooter games.

Sigh.  If none of you have been to Alaska and want to visit (I know of one >XI< member that already plans to move here), I strongly suggest you come between mid-June and mid-July.

Okay, end of Vol. III.  Ayaq

It's amazing how many think they know weapons and bullet performance. Alaska would not give you a second chance to figure out you were wrong. Would have loved to have had the opertunity to visit and hike and hunt there. Only animal here in CA I have shot with my 300 Winchester mag using a core loc round was a coastal deer at about 500 yards. Poor choice for a 115 pound deer. Not enough mass for the bullet to perform. My follow up shot I used a ballistic tip hollow point, really bad mistake. Not a whole lot of meat was useable after that. Choose the right round for the animal your hunting. It cracks me up even here in CA when I used to back pack I'd carry my 44mag and I'd sugest to my friends they should carry something too. Had some of the dummies show up with semi autos in 9mm. 40sw and 45acp. Good people rounds. Not so much for even a small CA bear. Good way to piss it off unless you get a lucky shot in

When I was younger...I had a friend who would go Bear hunting with a bow and arrow...I asked what he aimed for...his reply was the hump in their back...he was a tough old fart.
