I really, REALLY, hate Windows 10's automatic installation of updates. Sometimes, those forced updates break things in Windows. I also hate when I'm in a rush and my laptop tells me to not shutdown because an update is in progress. There is a way to take back full control of those updates:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/3085136/windows/two-ways-to-control-or-stop-windows-10-updates.html

I selected option 2 in the first way, "Notify for Download and notify for install". That's it. Control is now back in my hands. It's my PC, not Microsoft's, and they aren't my IT department who can impose their policies on me. I can now wait a little while to see if there are problems with patches and updates before I apply them.

Yep and it will keep changing. My dad against my recommendation got a new laptop with 10 and he complains it updates all the time.

Now his laptop is like a Cell Phone. When it get slower..... oh well. It will get even slower and slower as it will always change.

My 7 will stay the speed it is today. No updates no need.

This is hxtr not Donald Trump FYI

Seems there was a recent windows 10 update that allowed group policies for the pro edition. Windows 10 enterprise was the only version that could manage group policlies and I have tried it out myself.

But what the title of this topic is " Take Back Full Control of Windows 10 Updates", I find wrong because microsoft will still update your windows.

Recent Microsoft software terms and conditions now state that basically when there is a new update for one of their products that your PC must install windows updates. It happened to me on Windows 8.1 when I installed windows movie maker (Yes I know its a piece of shit) but next minute you know theres over 20+ windows updates installed even though I had them disabled. Later when reading through their T&C's it was in their writing saying you basically agree to downloading this microsoft program and if you do so you agree to microsofts windows updates. (Within those terms)

With that said Windows 10 comes preinstalled with alot of windows 10 software such as skype so good luck with your windows updates

With the option that I selected, I'm only notified of the updates. I have to manually choose to download and install. I'll put it to the test when the next updates show up.

That only let's you decide what time they'll be applied. I prefer the new option (if it works) to not apply them at all until or unless I decide to do it.

I have 10 on my laptop and turned updates is off on it.   Just disable the update service.  If you want updates at any point, just enable it.   Go to administrative tools, then component services, then services, then scroll down to windows update.  Right click on it, choose properties, then under "startup type" choose disable.   Update will not check or download any updates after that.

My PC usually downloads/installs updates then shuts down, did it yesterday when i was finished, started my PC this morning (this is a new PC only 3 weeks old, usually starts up withing 20/30 seconds) this morning i got a screen with the shop who built my PC and a spinning wheel which i always get but as i said it starts up straight away, this time nothing happened, it wouldn't let me shut the PC down it would only let my restart, i have had this happen a few times with my old PC's but restarting usually solved the problem, but today after 2 attempts 3rd attempt i left it while i had a shower etc, 40 minutes later it was no different, so i restarted again and this time pressed "F2"  to get into the Bios, in there i saw option which "Boot Maintenance" so i clicked that and it said it was repairing, when it finished it told me that my PC had not started normally and that i should restart (no really lol) anyway did that and it worked but before it started it downloaded/installed the updates again, when i got it going i got a message asking me about a certain program (sorry can't remember what it's called now) i was asked if i would allow this program to make changes to my PC as it said this program was a Windows program and was essential to Windows but if it caused any problems you could disable it, if it is so essential why would they let you disable it lol, anyway i left it and guessed it was probably this program that had caused me the problem, really pisses me off stuff like this, i really do not like going into BIOS and stuff like that, i am not a computer nerd but i have half an idea about some things, luckily i did today.5824a8a3883ca_middlefingerrudegesturesmi @@Astronomer i understand why you want to choose which updates to install etc but how do you know which ones to install or not, i wouldn't have clue to be honest, i am scared i might need some updates and i don't install them?

Read down into the article. The first option was where you edit the local group policy (if you have Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise).
