What are y'all getting?  Post it here, let's see it.  I'm gonna build a simple sound recording system.  My first purchase, interestingly, was found to be cheaper by Capital One Shopping on Ebay:

Good price on the 58.   The 58 and 57 are the workhorse studio mics.  I have a few, scattered here and there.   Cant go wrong with them.  Well unless your one of the few who's voice sounds like shit with it.  Be aware there are Chinese "knockoffs" of these mics too.  I dont see the big fuss over Amazon.  I hardly ever find stuff cheaper there.  And if I do, the damn thing is never delivered in 2 days.  Info on fake Shure mics  https://fakesm58.wordpress.com/

Is that a common thing, fake mics?  Anyway, I was shopping on amazon & the Capital One app sent me to that seller.  Dunno how well they vet their choices.  They do have virtual card numbers that can only be used for that particular point of sale/vendor; so if they have that, maybe they do their due-diligence.  Hey, presidents use that 57 model, I think.  Aren't the two basically identical as far as internal components go?  Pop filter & all that.  I'm looking at getting this:  https://www.amazon.com/Focusrite-Scarlett-Audio-Interface-Tools/dp/B07QR6Z1JB/ref=pd_ybh_a_4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=ZAB3XHVYX4RVBCAGQFQP  But I wonder if I then also need a CloudLifter , too.  So I'm still looking over the preamp thing.  Glad I did a little research & settled on XLR, & not just the whole blueyeti usb hype.

The 57 and 58 are basically the same mic.  Difference as you stated.  57 is for close mic of instruments and 58 vocal.  But both can be used in any application.  Fakes are a concern due to the fact these are the most popular mic on earth.  Fakes have even made it to retail chain stores.

Yup I have the same vocal mic and a Shure 57 for my guitar amp...they are workhorses and are good to where you don't have to drop like $200 + ...back in the early nineties I got both for around $100 a piece and still going strong !!

Focusrite have great preamps.  If it was me I would go for a Mackie Big Knob 3x2.   These are an all in one interface that can handle all your needs.  2 preamps, headphone outs, monitor control, etc..   They also use the Onyx+ Series preamps which are very nice.  I used a Mackie 1640i for over a decade recording music and the preamps are clean.  Not sure what your budget is, but the Mackie Big Knob 4x3 has stereo ins ands outs added.  Cost $349 vs the 3x2 at $249.   But at $119 the Scarlett will work nicely.  Ive played with the Presonus USB interfaces also.  They sound good too, but I always had driver issues.  Granted that was way back in the day when they first hit the market.  But the Mackie's offer Two headphone amps and volume controls.  That in itself is a great option, especially if your going to do a podcast with another person at some point.  I would spend the extra $140 and at least get the Mackie 3x2.   Research them all and see what fits your bill.

I use a focusrite 2nd gen 2 input/4output audio interface for all my recording through my PC with Reaper as my DAW (which is free for like the first 90 days,which I stretched over 200 days before I bought it for $60.)I think it's a good one to start out with.

Welp, watched some videos showing how to discern a real Shure from a fake & decided to unscrew what turned out to be the wrong part of the mic to do an internal check, & severed a little red wire; so I called Shure repairs & they said they will fix it for free if it's real.  So I shipped it for $8 & they will pay return shipping after fixing it...if it's a genuine Shure.   Derp.  All the external signs & the heft...& the internal signs indicate it is a real one.  Will find out in time.

Ok, gettin the Mackie.... & the mic was an authentic Shure; which is surprising for the price.  Shure is just gonna replace it rather than repair it, & it's shipping out this afternoon.  Had I known it was genuine for $68 shipped, I woulda bought a couple more of them.  Also found out that it doesn't have to be an 'authorized seller' from whom the mic was bought; the only requirement is that it's an authentic Shure, & they'll fix or replace it.

Good deal.  Which Mackie did you get ?  The Onyx Pre-Amps are nice and clean.  Meaning they do not impart any sonic characteristics that some other Pre-Amps do.   You have monitors or are you using headphones ?  And may I suggest a DAW that is so easy to use.  And has a free version.  Its called Waveform https://www.tracktion.com/products/waveform-free   Some will chime in about Reaper, which I used extensively also.  Its fine, but the GUI is clunky.  I use Studio One and Waveform exclusively.  I had Cubase, ProTools, and tried others and Waveform is by far the easiest and quickest to learn.  I use it exclusively to quickly record ideas and to get rough mixes.  I then import those ideas into Studio One and finish the project up.  Once you try a few DAW's out you will learn each ones quirks and limitations.  But in the 20+ years I have been recording shit via pc, I settled on Waveform and Studio One.  Well if you consider 4 track tape, I have been multitracking longer !!  Fun stuff.   Hit me up with any questions concerning gain, gates, compression, limiting, etc..

@MikeB   Hey thanks.  Gonna get that Big Knob; might as well spend a few extra $ & get a good baseline unit rather than the minimum, only to spend more later.  Pretty cool that POTUS's use the 57; the Shure tech guy recommended the 58 over the 57, interestingly.  I also like that they didn't ask how the mic broke, being my dumbassery & unscrewing it to have a look around.  I got Golden Earring's Radar Love on reel-to-reel along with a box full of other various tapes a friend's dad gave me 30 years ago.  Tech guy said he didn't think I'd need a Cloud Lifter for the vocal setup.  He was a real nice guy; chatted with him for a good 20 min.  Oh yeah, he also recommended the Shure MVI for a different price point.

Apparently, they forgot to ship since I talked with them just before the 4th; called them this afternoon & received an overnight shipping notice 20 min. later.  So it's coming, just had to call & remind them, apparently.  Said it'd just be easier to ship a new one since I was a dumbass & broke the original.

Heynow, 19 hours from 'label created' to my doorstep!  Can be sure it's a Shure as I followed the D.A.P. (Dumbass Authentication Protocol) & broke it by opening.  Very nice of them to replace it & overnight it once they realized they hadn't shipped it at the estimated date.
