I've got a '94 Chevy Silverado K2500 HD 4X4 and i think I have a very small head gasket leak, I have to add coolant about every 3 days. Doesn't leak when the engines hot only when it's parked and cold. My question is is there a way to fix it without having to pull the head and install a new gasket ? This truck is my baby and they don't make 'em like this any more. She's in Pristine condition and I love her... Tongue out any ideas would be greatly appriciated... HAMMER

If the truck is as you say your baby and in pristine condition why chance a cheap temporary fix...Pull the head and replace the head gasket and check the head fro warping before you replace it...It's not that expensive to do yourself...SmileSmile

I agree with blackbart and danko, I know i am surprised to,lol, u dont want to risk damaging anything else. R u sure u r not leaking from anywhere else? freeze plug in the back of the engine? also check ur oil, if its leaking into the piston ur oil will look like a milkshake. anyways good luck man. that is a nice truck

it should be noted.

1 are you seeing the leak or just having to top it off

2 if your not seeing it has ther been any fluctuation in your temp gauge, is it running just alittle warmer than normal.

the reason I ask is that chevy had a problem with a small leak on the intake manifold. we never had one come in completely messed up but they had concerns with loosing coolant and a warmer than normal temp gauge. not hot by any means just alittle warmer

and if it does happen to be the intake gasket you will be tankful that you dont have to rip beneath the heads

One of the chev engines had intake problems... I think it was the engine around your year. I can ask my brother who owned a shop for 20 years. He will know which years engine had an intake gasket problem.

That would be a lot cheaper to replace than a head gasket.

Thanks for the info,.... I would NEVER use a stop leak "quick fix", just wanted some feed back and my truck does fall under the couple o years that had the intake gasket problem, but the leaks on the other side I think... at least I can see where it's running (leaving a white stain) on the transfer case drive shaft. I'm gonna go ahead and have the gasket replaced. I doubt the heads warped as it never got hot enough to cause that. I had the top end done a couple of years ago and I think they fucked up the gasket install. By the way the cost for that is $1200.00... must be west coast prices are high..lol.  Sorry about not posting in the Auto repair section, been a member for a few years now and never knew we had one..lol... Thx everyone.. HAMMER

best thing is to do a pressure check on each cylinder thru the spark plugs. if u need a tp end kit for that truck p.m. me and i will only charge u shipping charge. but if u want to buy it urself go to a carquest and buy thier victor rienses kit not sure i spelled that right it is late but just say victor gastket kit and they should know what u r talking about. the victor kit is actually a felpro kit and it is cheap but really good for the price if not order from summit they r great for the home mechanic. again good luck i like that truck. i have an 85 k5 blazer and its not too far off what u got, at least not mechanically. good luck again my friend.

all i can say is that there is many possibilities just be sure that it is what u think it is. if u can get a good price on a rebuild or hopefully a rebuild then take it. if it is high mileage then do it anyway. but if not hen check everything that we have responded to. jst so u know 1500 for new engine and 1500 for new tranny, thats what is great for chevey if u can do it urself

As Dark stated these are bad for intake gasket leaks (leaks inside)

If it's not over heating most likely not ahead gasket............

Hammertime---where do you notice the leak at under the vehicle? Waterpumps will leak like that notoriously when on a cooldown-especially when they first start to leak. Put some cardboard under the engine compartment on the floor-after it cools down and leaks check to see location--front of motor under crank pulley-usually water pump, anywhere else, work your way up the leak until you don't see it anymore-that is where your leak is. Again head gaskets are not real common as are intake and heater line quick-connect fittings on the intake. Hit Bud or me  up before you throw alot of dough!!

Pressure check will not find it if it is temp related. xtra bead of sealant?

Just a quick note- GM did have problems with that but i think alot had to do with mixing green and red antifreeze which plugs them up like hogans goat,...gel... also ifyou add strictly red antifreeze(dex-cool) to low cooling systems.you increase the coolant/water ratio which increases the corrosiveness of the antifreeze..which in turn eats at aluminum.---Bud ...am I right on that?

first off/have it pressure tested and or with with coolant dye if possible.if no visual leaks then check for hydrocarbons in cooling system to confirm is combustion gases getting in cooling system-buy the chemical kit to do this..if it shows hydrocarbons then you have a head gasket leak. Now I don't recommend the repair in a bottle but Ive actually had customer install it with success the last 2 times they didnt want to do the repairs. The stuff was like 50 bucks and I could believe it worked .Not sure what make it was.I personaly if I could afford it would have it done rite.Take off both heads.Send them to a machine shop to have inpected.pressuretested and machined.valve job if needed and installed with new gaskets and headbolts and new thermostat.also flush out radiator and heatercore when its apart.gl

btw you could finance this at many shops now ..and the shops are hurting Im sure you can get a great deal at the moment.call around.
