Windows Restore is a fake system defragmenter, lurking on the internet intended to infect computer after computer. Scammers created Windows Restore to look like a useful PC performance enhancing tool, yet it is in fact a type of virus called a rogue.

If Windows Restore has infected your computer, you will most liekly experience the following:

  • Slow or sluggish PC
  • Windows Restore will pop up on your screen, interrupting you continually
  • Windows Restore will report multiple issues with the PC, which are all fake
  • You will be bombarded with alerts and warning
  • You may not be able to open other files or programs, instead you will see warnings saying application is infected
  • You may not be able to access the internet
  • Your web browser may redirect to unwanted web pages

I got one last week called 'Win 7 Antispyware". The are the same thing but different names. There are about a dozen or more names it goes under. It will lock up your computer and delete program files.

This happened to me the day after I bought a brand new computer. But I did a restore point before I did anything. So I restored back to the original setup and that worked to get rid of it.

Make sure you do regular restore points and that your internet security is working good. I caught my virus because I didn't have all of my security setup right before I went on to the internet.

There is ways to get rid of it, but if you get it you will have to use another computer to look up how to get rid of it.

It is one mean fucking virus, so be careful.

Good post Wizid, thanks

These trojan downloaders have been plagueing Windows since atleast XP.

My fix:

Safe Mode

run -> msconfig -> startup -> disable all -> apply -> restart in safe mode

This will disable MOST of the startup processes, including most of the fake anti-viruses.  These will also disable the exe's for most of your virus protection programs, spyware/malware programs and even ccleaner.  You can rename the malwarebytes exe to iexplore.exe.  This will allow you to run the program.  I have also had success renaming MSE, superantispyware, ccleaner and spybot: search and destroy.

Depending on the speed of the pc, it will take 3 to 5 hours to repair

Check this thread out as well from a post a while back for a fake antivirus program.  The registry entries may vary but the process would be similar.

To note as well, helped out a guy at work who had one of these little bastard programs.  It was disguised to look like Windows Defender.
