would someone that understands throle of ping rate in servers please explain something to all of us leser educateds dipsticks what pings have to do with in game play. i know that ping is not the only thing that comes into play. its just that we have many european friends come into the ace mod with ping raes of 150 to 200 or hiher and run circles around us on an americanserver where we have pings from say 40 to 120. when we go to their servrs we lag big time and get manhandled. please tell us what the secret is o we can make adjustments if possible.

Are you asking what ping is?  If so, it's the measurement of time in milliseconds (ms) from sending and receiving data to/from a destination.  The further the destination the higher the ping.

 

Hops also play a big part...  If you were to traceroute the ip address of one of the servers by typing tracert (ip address) you would get a response of the number of hops to the destination.  This is the route your data takes to the server.  So the smaller the number of hops (or routers the data goes through) the more direct route to the server (straight line and all that).

rubbish i come on to american servers and get done over all the time,i have lost count the amount of times i have shot someone from close range [ i mean aids test close lol]and yet no kill [its not all hacks i am sure?]my fps despite tweaking is about 25fps to maybe 90 if the server is half empty and the map less detailed, you have home field advantage over us and i am sure if you played on a european server they would have it over you, nothing personal mate but i have seen you racing around a map at warp 7,ping depends on distance from the server and connection [as far as i am aware,] that makes you closer than all of us,so you should have a better ping,just for the record chum i have problems getting on to the ace mod due to high ping, and many times come back off a map, due to crap fps and garbage hit reg

The big killer is variation in ping, not the actual ping itself. If you play at 150 every day your brain gets used to it and makes slight compensations. you will lead people a little more without even realizing it, for example.

The problem comes in when you play at a low level, say 25-35 all the time then jump to a server with a 150 ping. You will be shooting at ghosts. Those 125 milliseconds make all the difference

I have even seen the difference from 30 to 50. My ping is usually around 35 and I do ok, but when my connection is a little laggy and jumps up to 50-60 (thanks for not giving a fuck about that Comcast, by the way) it takes me about 4-5 rounds to get used to the new speed and the same in reverse when all the grannies on my street stop d/l photos from their damn grandkids

COD2 and COD4 dont use hitboxes, they use pixel collision detection

 

Anti-Lag in COD4

 

Its a latency-based system which uses algorithms to adjust hit registrations according to a mean average between 2 players whose latency (ping) is plus/minus 50 difference between them. It will delay the rigistration for faster connections, and speed it up for the slower one.

In practice, in speeding up the registration, this sometimes appears like you've been hit before the player has even taken a shot. But that is only an illusion created by the algorithm used.

Between players whose latency (ping) is not greater than a certain mean average between them, no noticable delay or speeding up is made.

In other words, it gives slower ping players a fighting chance against players with a much faster ping. But between players whose ping is roughly the same, no such adjustments are made.

If server admins want to reduce the amount of compensation used when anti-lag is enabled (and, it has to be said, many game industry insiders insist that anti-lag is by far and away the "fairer" system), make sure you exclude players with a ping greater than 50/60 the average player ping on your server.

So, for example, if the average player ping on your server is 50, set these settings:

set sv_minPing "20"
set sv_maxping "110"

It will have the draw back of limiting server traffic for players whose ping is outside those values, but will greatly reduce the blatant compensation illusions which can (and do) occur using anti-lag. This gives a more "pleasing" experience as you dont feel so robbed or cheated during play.

Turn off anti-lag, and you will see the old style hit registrations - the faster ping players will always win hands down against slower ping players.

the one thing i will agree with dean about [ all sit down in shock lol]is some doubts that all of us must have at one time or another over certain players, one example tonight on ace mod ,on the fubar map, i shot a german from very close range [nothing new my family have been doing that since 1914 lol] he did not die,

 in the end he just turned around like he was almost bored, and shot me,now because of distance etc this can happen when shooting a north american, but this guy had a far higher ping than me [i am uk based so closer to the server]he knew i could not kill him. and some of the ranges these guys [there were two of them]were firing from was insane,now please note i am not a sore loser, i am crap at this game,i have a overclocked 7600 gs and 1,5 gig of ram, in a self built frankenstein of a pc,all i want to do is come on, get slaughtered and have a laugh,this sort of thing [if i am right] ruins it

i could not disagree more , hardware wise,  mine is self built.  and old, but rates an "a" with pingtest ,my drivers are all up to date, and the system itself whilst being xp version 3 is old but is also maintained everyweek,ref spyware etc. packet wise 250 sent 250 recieved with a low ping rate to the tester.it cannot be bad hit reg all of the time [not with the same guy] and i have been told that if you are hit and the screen is shaking that guy is using "god mode" [ a hack] more than likly have to learn to live with it as i llike ace mod and the insane gits that use it
