I am thinking about upgrading my video card to something that supports directx11. Any suggestions on a video card that won't break the bank? And how can I find out what my power supply is in my system?

Thanks

What kind of $$ are you looking to spend may I ask? That will help narrow down the possibilities.

Best card on a budget might be an nVidia 550. I just bought an EVGA GTX 550 TI Superclocked (1Gb VRAM), ~$130. it still had some headroom left for further overclocking.

To see what you have for a power supply, open up your case and take a look at the label(s) on your PS.

Good Luck! Keep the questions coming!

I have an XFX Radeon HD 6950. It is awesome. Problem is, I am not sure what you consider too expensive. This one costs around $250 from places like New Egg

In fact most new high-end video cards support DirectX 11. Anything as new as or newer than a Radeon 5870/5850 should support it. All Radeon 57XX cardss and above support 11.

On the Nvidia side, A good value for '11' supported cards would be the NVida GTX460. It still might be a little high at around $180 (NewEgg again)

Again, all GTX400 series support '11'. The GTX200s and below do not.

All in all, you are looking at around $150+ minimum for DirectX 11 supported card

This is the cheapest I could find

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133326

For a card like that, you will they reccomend a 400W supply (I think that is far too low, depending on what else you run). I would suggest at least 650W/750W or higher. You will also need a minimum 38A, 12V rail on it and it takes 2 6-pin power leads to run it.

Hope that helps

Pondscumz - Best video card for DirectX 11?

You could get a GTX 580 Hydro Copper 2. I got 3 in SLI and their nice.  No noise because no fans, it's setup to be water cooled.  I picked up 3 of these for around $2400 and water system for a few hundred. If you just get a single card it's only $700 - $800 depending where you get it.. good luck.

I always try to follow the chipset of the mother board. If you have an ATI chipset go with ATI and vise a versa with GForce. The power supply is the backbone for your PC.....less power parts run like shit.

If you can wait a month, Nvidia is about to release the GTX600 series...thus dropping the price on the 500 series cards...just be patient a few more weeks, or month possibly.

Power supplies are key, but make sure you have enough voltage on your +12 v amp rail. If seen son 750 watt power supplies with only 35 amp rail.

If you bought it custon refer to your build, if the pc is stock good chance power supply is 500 or under. I would think one would want 750 or better with todays cards and such. But for sure, you will need to open it up and look if you dont know.

For your old power supply, try to take a nice, close and CLEAR picture of the side sticker...we can go from there...

For Power supplies, seek 80+ bronze or Silver certification, IDEALLY single-rail design, a good 750Watts to 850 Watts.

You can get good ones for a decent price if you know what to look for...

For graphics in DX11, how much are you really willing to pay?

The GTX460 1GB (make sure it's the 1 gig version) for $169 on the EGG advice is a good one...the 550Ti is weaker than 460, so in reference with the asking price, your call. The regular 560 is basically an overclocked 460...

I would try to grab a 560Ti or a HD6950 1GB (sometimes you ca find a 2GB card for a bout the price of a 1GB)....6870 is a little cheaper, but still a good decent card...

You can try NEWEGG.COM's Open box deals, EVGA B-STOCK cards to save even more...

EVGA B-STOCK (90-day only warranty)

GTX460 1GB for $109!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (that's what I'd go for for graphics on the cheap)

01G-P3-1370-RX EVGA GTX1024mb FPB for $109 B-STOCK on EVGA's site....

You can get a EVGA560TI for $179

GTX570 for $249....

GTX560 for $149

GTX550TI for $99

GTX480 for $219 (fast but warm and power hungry)

GTX470 for $159 (as fast as a 560ti but running warmer, and more power hungry)

This what I got....

2 X MSI N560GTX Ti Twin frozr II in SLI I'm really satisfied...

You can also consider the ASUS GTX560Ti DirectCuII, or the MSI N560GTX HAWK edition (noisier than TFII, but a little faster)

EVGA DS superclocked is a nice one too...

I have 2 EVGA GTX 470 Superclocked running in SLI. Got them on B-Stock a while ago for $200 each. I can run just about any game out right now at max settings and still have overhead. And mine really don't get that hot, but I haven't had any reason to overclock them anymore than they came from the factory either.
