Hey guys and gals.

I have been approached about a possible now job, working for a company located in Hebron, KY, which I believe is just across the River from Cincinnati, close to the Airport. Currently I live in the Western Suburbs of the Metro Detroit area (close to Lt. Laszlo), which is a decent area, unlike what most people have heard about Detroit.

My question is, can anyone give me some insight into the general area, is it safe (I have no idea where we would live yet) are there good schools around, etc.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Thanks all

Nick,

I grew up about 1.5 hours east of Cincinnati and still go back on occasion. I usually fly into Cincinnati and the airport is located just across the river in Hebron. If your job is in Hebron you don't necessarily have to live there. There are lots of suburbs around Cincinnati that are really nice and the real estate is probably priced about the same as where you are now.

It's hot as Hell and muggy in the summer and cold in the winter, but they usually don't get large amounts of snow like people up around the great lakes.  Downtown Cincy is probably a lot safer than most parts of Detroit, but they do have crime like any other city. As far as schools are concerned, Ohio and Kentucky have some of the best public schools in the country. Had I not been in a family business in California for the last 30 years I would have stayed in Ohio and raised my kids there. I have many fond memories of my childhood and still have family there. Things haven't changed much since I've been gone and if I had a good job opportunity in that part of the country I'd take it. For what I pay to live on the south end of middle class in California, I could live like a king in Ohio. Dayton is about an hour north of Hebron and there are tons of burbs in between where there are great communities, schools and good old southern Ohio hospitality.

Good luck!

I got a great family from my moms side not too far from you off the Ohio river east of Cincinnati. Love that part of the country.... except in winter. :)

Good luck Nick.... hope it all works out for you.

Uh, Just moving to Kentucky does not make me a Buckeye Fan!!!!. I will bleed Blue forever, wherever I live. And I will still support my "home" teams, except the Lions - they don't deserve any support.

Actually the job at the other place is not so bad. It is just that this is an upward move. I will be the Operations Engineering Manager, responsible for all the Controls Engineers and a Mechanical Engineering Manager. The office is almost entirely Engineering 25 of 35. I will be the 2nd in command after only the General Manager and with eyes on a relocation and further promotion to Western Michigan (where the Headquarters is at)

in 5 years. Also it is non-automotive (tired of dealing with those people as well you know Laz)

I am still in the discussion phase. I just wanted to get some kind of idea before I spend a lot of time going through the relocation process.

Thanks for all the information LOM It is much appreciated.

Just so you know Nick, Michigan has a long record of sucking big time when they play the bucks. My mom just turned 80, and she still watches all of the buckeye games.

A little piece of trivia for you. The Detroit Lions use to be the Portsmouth Ohio Spartans. My brother went to Portsmouth high and played in their old stadium. Since they've been in Detroit they've pretty much sucked ever since, as in the last 100 years or so.

Actually 1957 was the last time the Lions were NFL champs, which is before I was born. Funny thing was back in 1977 I worked for a golf range and bar and the owner always said "as long as the Ford family owns them, they will never amount to anything!". He couldn't have been more on accurate! There also is a rumored curse, I forget who, but they traded someone good who cursed them. Either way, they need a Mike Illitch to buy them....someone who want to win, not just ticket sales!

Almost Joe!! 1959 I blessed the world with my presence!! LOL!!

BTW, I lived about 30 minutes from Cincinnati for about a year when I was eleven years old. Could have been a "Nut" fan myself had we not came back to the Mitten!!

Well, this is it. I am down here in Hebron, KY. Tomorrow I have the final round of interviews - more like "get to know the people you will be working with" than interviews. It seems the list is down to one person (your's truly) and the position is mine to lose. That's not to say I won't blow it tonight. I have done that before.

I am having dinner with the big bosses at Montgomery's (I understand it is a decent Ribs house - great, just what I need - sloppy food) then all day tomorrow in the office meeting people.

Let's see how it goes!!!!!

As long as you don't get shit-faced at dinner and hit on the bosses wife, you'll do fine.

Good luck !

I don't know much about that area. I am about 1.5 hrs from there. I can definitely show you around the cinci area.I do have an old co-worker who lives close to there I can probably hit up for more insight.

Good Luck there Neeek! Watch that dry, sarcastic British humor and you'll be fine. Oh, and like LOM said, don't hit on the bosses wife (like Rodney Dangerfiled in Caddy Shack - "Want to earn fourteen dollars the old fashion way?!").

Well the good news and the bad news:

After all the round about stuff they made me an offer I couldn't refuse so I accepted. That was a couple of weeks ago and reality has now set in and I think I am going to back out of it.

The company and the position looks good, so do the people and there was plenty of good areas to move too (we were looking around the Blue Ash area of Cincinnati) but this is where the problems started

First off, the promise of health insurance from day one became "oh we just changed that policy to after 30 days" - funny no one mentioned that during the interviews. Then the relocation money that they promised me in order to move for my promised start date of Jan 6 became "You will get that in your first pay check ($15k). - potentially 3 weeks after I start.

So basically they want me to relocate my family, on my dime, in the next 4 weeks (with a major holiday in the middle). I just don't think i can do it. Especially pulling my 8 yr old out of school in the middle of the year and dumping him in another curriculum that most likely does not match up. (he is struggling in school right now)

We discussed it as a family and the decision was made to back out. It's a shame as it was quite a major upward move and would have more than made up for some crap stuff that happened in my last employment place.

So now we are targeting some time in the summer for somewhere, as we still desperately want to get out of the Detroit area - just not right this minute!!!!

Don't give up on it yet. After voicing your concerns, if they really want you they will make it happen. If not, you're better off finding an employer that operates on a much more professional level. You're taking all of the risk, and that isn't a good position to be in considering they want you to relocate.

Leave Detroit is the motivation?! Just get guns like everyone else! Maybe one like LOM's! LOL! I understand, though Nick. I left the area years ago! Of course I'm now near Flint, so it's #2 in violent crime. But not #1 like Detroit!

Any reason to leave Michigan is a good one, especially after that humiliating defeat to Ohio State.
