SO I'm enjoying my new hobby of occasionally smoking my pipe. I have a Savinelli Churchwarden 609 and I love it.

41psJymt%2BOL.jpg

The problem is... I have a strong DIY personality... I want to make my own pipe.

I've started doing lots of research on what sort of materials to make it out of and this is what I have so far...

Red Cedar stem (10 inch aprox.)   Briar bowl.

I did this sketch while bored in English class.... It's not exact but should sort of convey the style I'm going for.

What do you think? Any great wisdom to share? Have you ever made your own pipe?

Unfortunately I don't own a lathe :(  sigh

And dad sold our drill-press.... :(  double sigh

I'm going to have to get resourceful / creative to make this.

I deal with Native American artifacts and various antiquities for a living, and I often come across old clay Pamplin pipe bowls. A little factory in Virginia turned out millions of these things and they're always turning up.

I also own a few old pipes from the middle east and China.

Well, I finished carving the stem (and drilled a hole through it)

Now for the next 2 hours it needs to steam so I can bend it over a mold.

Just a suggestion, put a piece of wire through the hole while you steam and bend it. Otherwise the hole may collapse at the bend.

Alrighty,

Now I just gotta to let that sit in the mold for a week or two... I think I'll prolly sand it down a bit thinner too.

Oh, and gotta order some briar blocks.    http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-BRIAR-PIPE-WOOD-BLOCKS-CYPRUS-40-YEARS-OLD-EBAUCHONS-OLD-STOCK-GOOD-QUALITY-/380750152833?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item58a67a4481

@little_old_man: Thanks for the wire idea! I used a coat hanger... worked great!

That briarwood is some really hard stuff. I hope you have the right tools and a lot of patience. I've burned up my fair share of tools and blades cutting through seasoned hardwoods over the years. A few years ago I burned up my table saw motor trying to rough out a black walnut burl.

If you're good at carving and want to experiment a little, try getting a piece of catlinite (pipestone) and playing around with it. Much easier to work with than some woods and it comes in many colors from bright red to black and white. I have friends that have made some very interesting ceramic bowls too.

I bought a 3/4 drill bit on the way home today for the bowl.

I'm going to drill the tannon out, then slowly drill the bowl down till it's just flush with the opening at the bottom.  (using a drill press)

The rest I'm going to freehand "carve" with a dremel :)

I forgot to pickup a some delrin tubing to connect the stem to the stubble though... Gonna see what I can find lying around.

UPDATE:  Just took the stem out of the mold! It's held it's shape to about 90%  :)
