if it's not a regular occurrence you probably just have a run-away thread from a game.

Use Ctrl+alt+Del to get to the task manager. From there you can see what process is taking all the resources.

You can always google the process name if it looks unfamiliar. You can kill the thread manually from the task manager.

Be careful though. You are plucking at the heart strings of a crappy and unstable OS.

its been a long time since i used vista, I would start by upgrading to Win7 ;)

But if i remember correctly go to start then run and there you need to type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) then hit enter. When the screen pops up under the general tab check the box that says SELECTIVE STARTUP then go too the startup tab and you can pretty much uncheck anything that you dont need running which is pretty close too everything except things like your antivirus. Once done, click APPLY and then close the window. It will prompt you to restart. Do that. If youre unsure of what to uncheck or leave checked take a screen shot of the screen with the start up tab an post it here. I or someone else can walk you through it. Its quite simple.

Hope that helps!

You have lots of things open . You just don't see them running. Try this out http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653  Also what King Stinger said use msconfig / startup you can uncheck everything and be good to go. I would recomend you leave you AV on though.

As always do thourough scans for baddies. Also in this particular case look to see if that process is doing a lot of read/write operations.

If you are not sure what to turn off then turn everything off. When you reboot the things the pc needs will restart anyway. I use to run Vista too and never had a problem doing that every time!

Mule when was the last time you manually scanned your pc with something like Mal-ware Bytes?

Good point Dean, forgot that part..

For malware i scan with 2 programs because they both seem to catch things the other doesnt. I use Malwarebytes and Superantimalware. Both free and i recommend people too use them at least once a month minimum..

cCleaner is also a nice tool for cleaning out your registry of old / invalid entries and also deleting lots of temp / cache data.

cCleaner is a good program to but can be very dangerous to the novice user. I would never recommend using the registry fix tool on it either. Ive seen it cause more damage than good to the registry..

Not any particular OS, i think just in general. It deleted old registry entries as well as repairs some and thats where sometimes it deleted or repairs a registry entry that it shouldnt. If the program see's certain criteria met, it makes the changes and doesnt always quite distinguish properly what is good or bad or needs or doesnt need fixing. Ive heard people say they havent had issues to but from the issues i have heard and seen, its not worth the risk.

I'm always skeptical of those larger "boost your pc" deals.

This was one of two things that caused me a hell of a lot of trouble a few months back. Depending on your pc you probably wouldn't need it anyway! I talked to a tech and HE said that Iobit has a reputation about causing problems with their programs. I had their virus protection and it gave me such headaches I had to have it manually removed!  I wouldn't trust anything from IOBIT!
