I was chatting with Sliderulz (sp) in TS about older guy flicks. It occurred to me that many of our younger members might not be aware of some of the really great "older" guy flicks that exist. I am sure we have many many registered users and Idiots who were born in the late 80's and early 90's. So I thought I would try to start a fun thread where we could list a pre - 1990 guy flick that is a classic, thereby introducing the younger folks to some cool movies. For example, we had a XI member in TS who had never heard of "Cool Hand Luke". Girls, feel free to join in but remember this thread is for guy flicks. May be you ladies could use these ideas to surprise your man date night. Watch one of these movies and bring him a beer and you will have one happy man.

So my first suggestion is, "Cool Hand Luke". So many great lines in that movie like, "shaking the bush boss", or "what we have here is a failure to communicate."

The story revolves around a guy who is sent to prison in the south and tries to escape. Guys, this might be a good date movie because Paul Newman is the star and women love him.

Who has the next movie?

1.) Cool Hand Luke

2.)

Most of my favorite older movies are war flicks.

My suggestion for second is The Dirty Dozen.

Released in 1967, it had a great cast including Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine and Charles Bronson.

There are dozens more from that time that are on my list.

John Wayne had a string of westerns I never tire of. El Dorado, Rio Lobo, Rio Bravo, all come to mind. " I would've shot her, but she had such purty legs"

True Grit (John Wayne version)

Rooster Cogburn: When's the last time you saw Ned Pepper?

Emmett Quincy: I don't remember any Ned Pepper.

Rooster Cogburn: Short feisty fella, nervous and quick, got a messed-up lower lip.

Emmett Quincy: That don't bring nobody to mind. A funny lip?

Rooster Cogburn: Wasn't always like that, I shot him in it.

Emmett Quincy: In the lower lip? What was you aiming at?

Rooster Cogburn: His upper lip.

What about Ben Hur? "We keep you alive to serve this ship. Row well, and live, Forty-one." Not to mention Haya Harareet was one cute Jewess in that movie.

Hey @@TheLastColdBeer, I'm surprised you didn't mention "The Hill", considering your avatar.

It's an excellent guy flick and put Sean Connery on the map. One of my friends grandfather was the Medical Officer (Michael Redgrave).

The Hill is a bit too British for most Hollywood folks, although I cherish it. A more watchable movie is Play Dirty with Michael Caine & Nigel Davenport. Davenport played a marvelous role as an undisciplined, rotten scoundrel. I think he thoroughly enjoyed playing his part. In an earlier thread, SOB led me to several Brit war movies I'd never seen, and Ice Cold in Alex turned out to be a gem.

Yep, loved Sinbad. How about the Matt Helm movies? They don't require a lot of thought.
