That's the problem in the UK, they look impressive but have little killing power for anything larger than rats or pigeons. However because they are all you can get without a licence they are extremely popular, and a huge industry has grown around them. The levels of accuracy nowadays are amazing, but in an overcrowded island, unless you have land or written permission, there is nowhere to use them unless you want the police surrounding you.

Gun legislation can be tricky.  I am a gun owner and think requiring insurance would be a great start.  I also really need to get a gun safe!

Saw this a while back, now you boys over the pond know more about shooting and hunting, so I'm not trying to tell my Granny how to suck eggs. However in the ranges of ammo available here and the low powers, pistols limit 6ft lbs, most between 3-5, spring powered rifles most around 10-11 ft lbs it is cruel to use these for hunting. Once you get above .177 the penetrating power just isn't there, .22 is pushing it unless 11+, and above this for normal guns it's in my opinion not powerful enough for hunting, unless very close. .20 is a good compromise but hasn't caught on, wounding an animal is cruel and low powered weapons do that don't they?

ps Many in the UK don't realise the difference between say .177 and .22 with a power limit on guns. With say the max 12 ft lbs there is a lot more velocity (hence penetrating power) with .177 than .22. However, as I used to find when shotgun shooting many don't consider it a mans gun unless 12 gauge. Myself and other experienced shooters found 20 gauge to be just as effective for good shots and a lot lighter to carry. So .22 is almost always the biggest seller for air rifles when in fact for the majority .177 would be a better choice, are these .22?

He said 12 lbs. not ft./lbs... so I took that to be the weight of the gun.  The title on the screen above literally indicates the caliber.    It's a .357 round, 910 fps with a 95-grain bullet; & around 200 ft. lbs with a 170 grain bullet.  Hey, how has your recovery gone?  Feeling better?

Yea thought you'd misunderstood, that weapon is a brute, of course the advantages of airguns, especially PCP if kept sub sonic is the silence compared to firearms, poachers favourites, taken over from .410 shotguns. I'm a bit better thanks for asking, but not there yet, I dodged yet another bullet a few weeks ago  the reaper gets nearer.

I always wanted a more powerful pellet rifle. Here in Canada our pellet rifles are rated in FPS feet per second. Under 500 no license required over 500 a Firearms Acquisition License is required along with firearms training and background checks.  
Most air guns(pellet rifles) are rated at 495 FPS with others requiring documentation are 1200-1500 FPS. 
The 500 FPS .177 cal guns are barely good for Squirrels or rats at about 40 feet or less. 
@RobMc @Krackennutz I would love to know what caliber and FPS these 2 guns are rated for? The approximate price would also be helpful too. 
I would love something similar to dispatch raccoons and the like. These pests are always trying to kill my hens, at my garbage and into my garden. Even though I have everything secure they are nasty and love to destroy things.

Wow that is low, I print a table I found giving fps for our legal maximums, it looks to me as though you'll definitely need a licence to be humane. My recommendation for racoons would be minimum .22 or better .25 if you can get them, with a heavy pellet. Although pcp guns are the best they require quite a heavy investment, for varmint occasional use get a high powered spring or better still gas ram. Lots of good manufacturers, prices uk?, I've included a link to let you compare yourself

Forgot to say Wayne a spring powered gun left loaded weakens the spring quickly. But a gas ram can be left loaded, with safety on, which may be better for you?

What is the UK legal limit without a Firearms Certificate for Air Guns in the UK?

UK Air Rifle Legal Limit - MUST BE UNDER 12 FOOT POUNDS

UK Air Pistol Legal Limit - MUST BE UNDER 6 FOOT POUNDS with ANY pellets it can fire.

These limits must be met with any airgun pellet!! Power will vary depending on the weight, size and shape of the pellet you chose. Try not to get fixated about power, power is important BUT accuracy is far more important than power. Air guns with power levels above this require a UK FAC or Firearms licence from the Police.

Most Air Rifles output around 11-11.8 fpe, Co2 Pistols output around 3-3.5 fpe and Air Pistols can be up to 5.5 fpe. Power levels on NEW spring guns or recently re-spring guns tend to increase slightly as the spring and seals bed in.

Velocity or Air Gun pellet speed

.177 (4.5mm) Air Rifles have a pellet range from approx 7 to 17 grains, which gives a maximum of 875 fps with a 7 grains pellet and 560 fps with a 17 grain pellet.

.22 (5.5mm) Air Rifles have a pellet range from approx 9, to a massive 30 grains gives a maximum of 770 fps with a 9 grains pellet and to 420 fps with a 30 grain pellet

.177 (4.5mm) Air Pistols have a pellet range from approx 7, to 17 grains with a maximum of 620 fps with a 7 grains pellet and 395 fps with a 17 grain pellet.

.22 (5.5mm) Air Pistols have a pellet range from approx 9, to 30 grains which gives a maximum of 545 fps with a 9 grains pellet and 295 fps with a 30 grain pellet.

Been shooting a Sheridan Blue Streak .20cal for decades. After reading this thread, checked on pellet availability. Holy.....better hang onto the original Sheridan 5mm yellow boxes I have. Couple of tins of Crow-magnums too. The .20 can take out ground hogs & rabbits, but you have to choose your target location carefully. The power just isn't there.
