Her name is Bella, a Shepherd/ Boxer/ Retriever mix. She is very gentle with the kids, not so friendly to strangers in our yard, and expects to ride with me every damn time I get in the car (many times she gets to). Outside my family, my best buddy. Getting a can of Alpo ("Prime Cuts", mind you) for Christmas from my daughter, she was thrilled with it "Mushing" my son in the snow Waiting patitently for a "Pup"-peroni snack.... Good dog. I don't really know you Shamu, but I am SO sorry about your wife. On some level, I think I can somewhat relate. When we lost my wife's mother a couple years ago (my daughter was 7 then, and as you can tell by the Alpo picture, they are best buds), my daughter was *devastated*.... but I remember poignantly, that she told me that "Bella's fur is good at soaking up my tears". Damn... that struck home hard. I think my dog was more consolation to her than I was. I lost my grandfather (that taught me about hunting/ fishing/ LIFE) when I was 13, and I had a Collie named Buddy then - and his matted fur sure soaked up a few of my tears, too. I think you may understand what I mean. I am one of those silly Christians that believe in an afterlife, and if my calculations are correct, you WILL see your wife again, along with your dogs.... and in a better place. Un-conditional love is hard to find in this world, unless you get a dog. Then.... it is pretty easy. That being said, tomorrow I think I'll take my silly ol' hound to Petsmart, to get her one of those fancy, marinated $12 hog thigh bones (her concept of "heaven").
