Turn the black knobs on the heatsink in the direction of the arrow 90 degrees and pull up to release. More than likely your video card fan is running on auto from the cards bios, not good for a gtx295.Install EVGA precision or MSI afterberner and create a custom fan profile to ramp up the fan speed as the card heats up.

They protrude through the MB and look like plastic points that are pushed into 4 holes in the MB and self lock in place. Am I right in that the fan needs to come off so I can get to the CPU? Have not seen any knobs or arrows.......perhaps under the fan I suspect. Downloaded EVGA Precision and was clueless with what to do with it. A Window opens but no files or programs to open. No clue what I was to do with it so I have already deleted it. I do have MSI downloaded and again no clue what to do with it but it looks more professional than EVGA. I am the classic computer illiterate. I also find absolutely no fun in working on a PC. My attitude certainly does not help in this matter. I will say again there was VERY little dust to be seen inside my PC. Digesting all that's been said I suspect the CPU and the heat sink compound. I will say vacuuming and air dusting have improved things but not fixed them. I may have to rely on my son who works for Siemens doing network and laptop type service. I just do not feel like asking because he will just go his way regardless of what I might like to just have him do. It can be exasperating, but he is good at what he does. Survived several layoffs when more senior employees were released.

If you don't have any program installed for graphics fan speed,I suspect your video card over your cpu as the problem. If you want to check it anyway post a pick of your cpu fan and we'll see if we can tell you how to take it off. If you want to see if the video card is the problem, you can download "Nvidia Inspector" which requires no installation, just run the program, take fan off of auto and turn up manually and try a game and see what happens; downloads.guru3d.com/NVIDIA-Inspector-1.94-download-2612.html

You can't just "check" your thermal compound. If you pull your cooler you'll have to clean it with a xylene-based cleaner, put on new thermal compound (properly) and re-attach your cooler.....definately not something I recommend a noob to do. If you suspect the CPU is overheating, there's a lot of tools out there that monitor your CPU temps....check with your mobo manufacturer. Run the CPU at 100% load and see exactly what the temp is BEFORE you go messing with the cooler!

The dust would only collect around the fan and on the cooling fins so you would see it. Everything under the fan is flush mount. So after pulling off the sides to see if it was temp related you proved it was. The next step is finding out what is over heating. I would make a general statement here saying in order from the most common overheating device to the least is video card CPU Motherboard Power Supply RAM The formentioned programs will help you out very much in diagnosing which device is heating up. That does not mean its going bad. The other thing these programs do is allow you to set your fan speed. Now it is very possible that your fans have been set to quiet mode instead of performance mode. Here's a link to the nividia system tools http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia-system-tools-6.08-driver.html it does drop the graphic into the tool bar but all you have to do is double click it and it goes right onto your desktop. Keep an eye on the temps it will tell you which ones heating up. I know its alot but its the way to tell whats going on. Good luck let us know what you find out K Awards

Thats a guess but it would be up there. So if its possible to watch for one that has a spike in temp. I think that would be you culprate Awards

Have you reinstalled the game??? I have not reinstalled but could. Would the game be capable of totally crashing the PC, except for the fans which remain running? I still lean to overloading hardware or something like that. Another odd thing, I crashed multiple times on a Rats type map. Same thing happened before. The following maps I had no hard crashes. Could a specific map or maps cause a system to overheat?

If your machine ONLY crashes with COD 5, then I would start there. Save your profile, so you don't loose your rank, and give it a go. It can't hurt. You don't want to spend money buying other hardware until you are sure you have eliminated software. Also just move you maps, and mods to another location before reinstall, and try redownloading mods and said faulty maps. If all is well then it was that that caused the issue. If it still hapeens, then move your maps and mods from the other location back, and focus on hardware. You have nothing to loose.

Shamu mate its not your game.........If you can search my posts from a couple of months ago I went through exactly the same problem... ITS EITHER YOUR GPU OR CPU OVER HEATING...... The more detailed the map the harder your GPU has to work creating more heat.....Msi afterburner will give you a better idea of temps...What I did was try to work out how long into game did the comp crash then start playing and just before the comp crashes get out of game and check your temps .... I called Red Barn Computer, the people who built my PC for assistance. http://rbc.redbarncomputers.com/?page_id=30 I can have them take over my PC remotely. What I learned is that while my GTX 295 shows all updates installed when checking NVIDIA for updates there are some Beta updates that do not show when checking if your system is current. So while my system shows "Current" there are still some updates that are more recent than mine. Don't ask me how to find the again. The tech lost me after a few clicks. So I now have the latest Beta update and will try to see how things go. There were 3 beta updates since my last one that supposedly had me current. No hardware or overheat issues were apparent. So now to try and see what happens with the "secret" update. Kind of fun watching a tech move around on your PC looking for possible issues. I was lost after a few clicks he made Crashed again but seemed less frequent, got through 3 maps before crashing. Hoping a reboot makes a difference.
